Willies enrolls at Texas Juco

Winston and Newton were both 5 star recruits. Willies was a 3 star.

There is a reason why teams are willing to take a chance on a 5 star that don't extend to 3 stars.

Some posters STILL don't recognize the significance of Willies leaving Iowa...

(1)Iowa has such a hard time recruiting high quality athletes to come to Iowa. The guys I mention in the first sentence readily admit how hard it is to recruit to Iowa 'cause it's cold or land-locked or etc. They never admit KF's style of using players also makes it difficult to recruit high quality athletes 'cause attitude is way more important than athletic ability when Iowa's staff determines players who see the field. It's hard to recruit at Iowa and KF's style of choosing players who play makes it harder...
(2)Every once in a while Iowa lucks into a high quality athlete. If Iowa throws that potential talent away (without compunction) as they did with Willies, it makes it even HARDER to convince high quality athletes to consider Iowa.

No one who cares about recruiting to Iowa is saying Willies (or CJ) is that all American, world beating talent. Only detractors are trying to accuse others of making the comparison. Jeeze, do detractors think they are making any sort of point (or using any sense)?

Willies may not have been the highest of quality recruits (no one knows 'cause he wasn't given an opportunity at Iowa) but he did have one thing Iowa receivers,IMO, greatly lacked: speed.. and when given the opportunity like in preseason, the ability to make plays.

KF has taken a chance on many 3 star and lower athletes. Like I said in my previous, KF cares about a player's attitude way more than athletic ability.

Homer I don't typically agree with many of your posts, and this one is no different. I won't try to argue with the points you made in this post… With the exception of the bolded.

Willies was a redshirt freshman playing for his first year. He got some targets early on. He started to question his role after only his THIRD collegiate game!! He showed the inability to read defense/be on the same page as the QB (ie. Two separate plays vs Purdue). It was reported he was a little banged up in the middle of the season, and that was reason for him not getting more playing time at that time. To say he wasn't getting an opportunity is a stretch of epic proportions. Willies needed to exercise patience, and he did not. This whole Willies daytime tv drama is in no way an indictment of the program; and to suggest otherwise would be (no offense...) hater homerism.

I think your last paragraph somewhat illustrates part of the problem with the KF era particularly at the WR position. Yes he was inexperienced and yes he did need to have patience but what young talented WR doesn't fit that mold? On top of that Willies was a willing and tough blocker which is Ferentz's #1 priority for a WR.

WRs in general are the biggest drama queens, selfish egomaniacs, pouting, lazy, etc on a football team. If you want a good WR on your roster, be in NCAA or NFL, a coach has got to learn to deal with this and learn how to stroke an ego. There are reasons why a lot of Hawkeye WRs don't display these traits: 1) KF doesn't often recruit them, 2) most of the WRs he does recruit have no business on a Power 5 roster are so happy about it they know better than to complain. The current WR depth chart is pretty much full of those types of players.

Ferentz just doesn't have the ability to take kids with a lot of edge or immaturity and mold them into better people/players. He seems to identify these types of players early, dismiss them, publicly ridicule them, and they flounder.

Not sure if serious.

What people want to gloss over, and what you are looking over when you say "attitude" is it is also about getting the kids to learn to work hard in the weight room, in the film room, and on the practice field. Do you get more out of a kid when you reward them with playing time when they just aren't pushing themselves to be the best they can be? Or will you get more out of a player if you push and push and push him to his limits? One of the ways to incentivize this is by playing time.

QB play absolutely lost two games this season and if you want me to sit you down and explain why again I will.

I want nothing to do with you. If we were face-to-face, I'd politely ask you to STFU. You wouldn't of course, but at least I'd ask nicely.

But you're right, QB play DID lose us the Tennessee game.

I don't know any program that respects a kid who quits on his team mid-season. Your comment kind of shows your disconnect with real life.

And if you think Willies runs a 4.4 40, please PM me for some amazing investment opportunities. I'll require a $10,000 down payment just to send you the prospectus, it's that good!

The world is littered with "NFL bodies" who never sniffed the league. Takes more than physique to be a football player.

So what time were you able to determine he runs?

If you want to justify Kfs decision to not play him based on attitude or lack of knowledge of the play book, whatever, but spare us the intellectually dishonest BS that he wasn't a fantastic prospect.

We already saw him do it. He was fast and tall, made some very good catches on poorly thrown balls in games, and some great catches in scrimmages. It doesn't matter if it was a scrimmage, it was something that no other receiver we've had in the last ten years was physically capable of doing outside of maybe Marvin McNutt or DJK.

That's because you remember when I boxed your *** so many times in the past. Your takes stink and you have little to no clue about Iowa football. That's been proven over and over in the past.

If we were face-to-face you wouldn't say one damn word Bob.

A poor defense put Iowa in a massive hole against Tennessee. If you think QB play lost that game, you are dumber then I thought.

Bobby Kennedy described him as a "mid-to-low 4.5 guy" in August. Just 10 WR's at this year's NFL combine ran below 4.45, only two of them taller than 6'1"

I take wire transfers only.

Someone who quits after a few games his first season, and lies about the reason, is not a "fantastic prospect". He's a quitter and a loser, more likely to end up in jail or flipping burgers than playing in the NFL. I'm not hoping for that outcome, I actually hope he proves me wrong and will applaud him if he does... but most guys like him are never heard from again, because they don't have the character needed to succeed.

And if Derrick or his stepdad want to use this post as a bulletin-board motivator - awesome! Seriously. Defy the odds, kick a$$, turn it around.

Boxed my *** so many times in the past, huh? And I would, of course, say whatever I please face-to-face. I've never been known for holding my tongue, good or bad. But thanks for the PM, it helped me figure out how to post where I am.

I'm sure it's not the first time someone had to hold your hand and guide you through something.

DW has the ability to succeed. Whether or not he will remains to be seen. At this point I wish him well and he will be missed.

That's how I feel as well. I wish he would have stuck it out at Iowa but can also understand him wanting to play. Maybe Iowa wasn't a great fit for him. I can say there are some other young WR's who I'm excited to see grow. Mainly Scheel.
