Williams chooses New Mexico over Iowa

This conversation has gotten off topic. Just look at Fran's background and experience and where he got that experience. He doesn't have problems connecting with anybody. UofI is not the right fit for every kid.

I think Fred's experience in the NBA gives him more of an insight of how to communicate effectively with young black men than Fran got in Albany and Bethlehem, PA. Plus this:
Lol, I'm sure the coach nicknamed "White Magic" as a player because he was from urban Philly has trouble recruiting African Americans, I'm sure race plays absolutely no part in any decision he makes. And Duke has been terrible with all those white players, right?

What a joke... I can't believe the discussion even got to this point.

Wow. Poe's law is in effect. My bad. I didn't realize how bad things have gotten around here.

Don't bring race into a discussion that has nothing to do with it and then claim Poe's law. Life lesson for any situation.

Are you suggesting that Iowa is getting the same quality of recruits as Duke? Duke gets top 25 white players, yes, but they also get guys like the #1 pick in the upcoming draft like Jabari Parker, and top 20 pick Rodney Hood.
And the #1 player in the 2014 class, Okafor. And the #5 recruit in Tyus Jones...both Midwest kids. All Midwest recruits are not the same, just like all white recruits are not the same. Mike Dunleavy does not equal Kyle Meyer.

No one is suggesting that Fran does not pursue black players, or that he cannot relate to black players. I go back to the race component only to consider what out of state American born black recruits see when they visit Iowa.....not many players on the roster like themselves. Human nature is to be more comfortable with guys who have similar backgrounds to them. ....we have only Clemmons that shares that background right now. At OSU, for instance, there are about 10-12 guys like Clemmons.

What I am saying is there are plenty of schools that have success with white players, and I don't think that someones race alone should not be a factor. Jabari Parker is and African American from Chicago, he is also a devout Mormon, which I'm sure differentiates him from any of the other players you listed. There are millions of factors that go into a recruits decision.

I'm not going to even take part in this discussion anymore, it's gone down a moronic path and I don't think anyone on this board is in a position to speak about race relations.

LOL. I didn't bring race into the discussion sir. Either I was making a joke about the fact race had been brought in to it, or I seriously believe Fran doesn't know who to talk to black people. I don't even know anymore. I've been Poe'nd.

Weak.

Absolutely no one said we dodged a bullet with Atwood, just that there wasn't a great need for another tweener who was weak defensively and it was easy to understand why he didn't want to compete for pt as a 3.

Clearly no one is saying that this time, Williams was a true power forward and good defender that we really could have used and there is no clear reason why he would go elsewhere.

Uh, New Mexico is a better basketball program than Iowa is? Fact is Iowa hoops has got a long way to go to national relevancy and respect for players not familiar with Iowa to feel good about this program. Iowa is 3 years removed from being one of the worst programs in college basketball and this past season's monumental collapse isn't helping the image of progress either. Going to have to continue to show signs of improvement and do things during season to get noticed.

Hope Dom Uhl is ready to be a 3 year starter.

Mularky. We play in the best conference, and we have the 33rd best coach in the country (and climbing). New Mexico is a joke, along with Noodles Neal. If this kid is dumb enough to waste his remaining time in the desert playing for nothing against nobodies, good riddance to him.

Maybe, but I dont think NM "success" if you can call it that over the recent time period is very impressive either.

They are basically invisible to most of the country playing in a mid major conference in the mountain time zone.

Except when they are playing in the actual NCAA tournament.

Yeah, but when New Mexico was playing in the NCAA tournament, there were four otter games going on at the same time. When Iowa played, they were the only NCAA tournament game on TV. Advantage Iowa for exposure.

If NCAA success was the main factor then Wisconsin would have been the obvious choice.

Fact is that Neal is just a good recruiter.
