Will Walsh and/or Blythe play next year?

In this article (http://footballrecruiting.247sports...ld-do-big-things-early-in-their-careers-14146), Barton Simmons of 247Sports lists Walsh/Blythe as guys that could play right away. Clearly the Hawkeyes have a question mark at guard, but both Gettis and MacMillan have starting experience. Having watched video of both Walsh and Blythe, I can't really tell if either of these guys is talented enough to play right away in the Big 10. To me the safe bet seems to be penciling in Gettis and MacMillan with Heiar and Orne next.

So you're saying you don't think either of them are talented enough to play ahead of Gettis/Macmillan/others?

I don't think they are ready. I think they have the talent, but they need the time in the system. I personally would like to see them redshirt. I think there are guys ahead of them right now that have the schemes down and the time in the weight room. I think Donnal would be a name to watch as well.

Never underestimate the development Gettis and Macmillan have had from being in the system and training under Doyle. I wouldn't be surprised if either freshman earned some playing time over the course of the year, but doubt either start on opening day.

i'd say no also. these would be great guys to redshirt and keep bulking up IMO. but, you never know. bulaga stepped right in as a freshman, but he was obviously something special.

Reiff
Gettis
Ferentz
MacMillan
Zusevics

That's the line barring injury.
And I think that's a solid group.

Everybody also forgets to mention that in front of them are Donnal and Scherff, both of which were 23rd and 44th ranked OLineman respectively. And then we have Heiar as well who looks to be a solid pickup as well. I know that Walsh and Blythe were ranked higher but I would rather save them. Over the course of the next two seasons we will lose four of the current starting O-lineman. Unless Walsh and/or Blythe absolutely come out firing at fall camp I would rather save them for when we need them. After this season we lose Gettis and Zus for sure and odds look good Reiff will jump to the NFL, and then after next season Ferentz graduates. So I guess my point is unless they exponentially outperform one of the current starters I would rather hold them until at least next year.

Uh, and Van Sloten, and Bofelli, and Casey McM, and Doonal, and Scherff, and Heair....

So, No. they will not play next year on the starting O-line or two-deeps.

In addition to BB, Mike Jones, Dace Richardson, Reiff, and others have made an impact as true freshmen. I think most of them saw the field due to injury, but they were ready to play. I honestly believe our 0-line depth is pretty good, but I wouldn't rule out exceptional recruits being able to contribute if called upon. I think they have a tough time beating out guys who know the system better, but if called upon I think they could do the job.

I would never say never, but I doubt they see playing time unless there are injuries. And I would doubt they are even the first guys off of the bench if an injury happens.

I think they will both redshirt. Our tackle depth makes it that there is no reason that Walsh shouldnt redshirt. And its possible at guard they don't redshirt Blythe. If they dont RS him he will be on the 2 deep and could see the field if someone gets injured. As for other incoming freshman that can play? I have heard a lot of people talking about Cooper seeing some field time this year. I guess I would be surprised if he jumped Carl Davis for PT. Davis was getting some pretty positive reviews last year. I think Canzeri will get a chance to return kicks. Either Coe or McCall will be in the running mix. And I also think that Law won't be redshirted.
