Will Vandenberg fill Stanzi's shoes?

Man I hope so! Good performance at the shoe but terrible against Northwestern, and lack luster against Minnesota! If so they could be a suprise team and finish far ahead of expectations!

The o-line and Coker will really help. I think Vandy has the talent, a very good OL, a solid back. If he cant get it done with all that going for him, he was plain over hyped.

Let's start at the point where Wootton destroyed Ricky's ankle.

JVB was totally unprepared to come into that game. Because of the fact that all of Iowa's games, even the so called cupcakes, were close in score, our 2nd and 3rd stringers didn't get the reps they needed. Add to that JVB and Weinke were both Freshmen at the time. It really boiled down to that JVB was not ready. Not his fault, but that's the way it was.

We all know about the tOSU game.

Minny really dialed up the pressure against JVB. While tOSU's defense mostly sat back and waited for JVB to make a mistake Minny blitzed, and blitzed often, trying to create a mistake. They pretty much took our offense out of the game. Add to that the coaching staff was content on running a very basic offense and letting out D do the work and Minny looked on paper to be a disaster for JVB.

Fast forward to today and this coming season. JVB will be a junior, and will have three years in our system. It is not uncommon for a very young QB to get rattled by blitzing defenses. Older, more seasoned QB's take advantage of D's that bring pressure. I fully expect JVB to be able to recognize blitzes more effectively and adjust accordingly thus, JVB will do just fine.

Yea man I really hope so! I just hope he's not the next Kyle McCann. And the whole Jake Christensen thing was painful!

Ok thanks for the insight. Just a little alarming that our back up Qb's weren't prepared, granted they were only freshman, but that was toward the end of the season. I hope the coaches have learned from that and the back up now knows he is a play away from being in there! It looks like it in recruiting because we keep getting some Qbs each year, I guess we convert alot of them too.

I am still not sold on vandenberg...i know most are but I think we will see a significant drop in qb play. Stanzi was good....and we will not see a replication of his play in 2011. Thankfully the oline will be better.

I'm sure people said that after Banks left too. How well did Iowa do in 2003 again? I can't remember...

I agree

JVB will be a good QB but I hope people's expectations get in line so if he doesnt perform at Ricky's level there wont be any meltdowns*

*wishful thinking, wont happen

Watching Jake warm up in Soldier Field before UNI, I thought it was immediately obvious he wasn't going to be a successful B1G QB. He had poor accuracy at all distances and threw a pass that didn't allow any room for receiver adjustment. Beyond that, he looked brutally stiff in the shuffle drills.

Vandy is light years ahead of Jake in his fluidity. However, he doesn't throw the easiest ball to catch. If you put a lot of zip on the ball it needs to be extremely accurate, or there is a good chance of a muff that can turn into an INT.

Another concern is that Vandy might be a little too mechanical. This can make it hard to react to pressure and also to make creative throws, such as the drop into the zone between the LBs and safeties.

All of this can be worked on and the early schedule should provide a good opportunity to iron out the kinks.

No, I think we will see a drop-off at QB unfortunately. For a Junior, he has not had a lot of experience at QB. Yes, playing in the shoe (and doing quite well with what the OSU defense game him) is definitely good experience. But, I also see a QB that crapped his pants against little ole northwestern and minny. OSU wins easily in the shoe if Tressel has his boys blitz more.

I don't think it is out of the question we could see some Kyle McCann like moments out of him. And, if some injuries happens to the o-line, who knows what will happen.

I could also see Vandy not finishing the year getting injured and that would be truly frightening as the QBs behind him have really no experience at all.

I hope he has a high learning curve because if not, it will be a waste of some good receivers and a good o-line. He is going to have to muster up ice veins on the road this year......similar to what he did in the shoe.

I think Jon said it is probably unfair to put these high expectations all on him, but I do think the QB position will be a pivotal position for the Iowa Football Team this year. If JV struggles, the Hawks are going to have trouble putting points on the board. And with a drop off on the defense side of the ball, games may not be as closely decided.

We have to be a mulit-threat on offense. If they stack the box on Coker, Vandy is going to have to find a way to make them pay or it is going to be sack and interception city this year. Like Deace said, "you can't hide your quarterback."

I hope Vandy proves us wrong.

I sure hope so, but history indicates that he will not fill Stanz's shoes. Under Hayden & Ferentz, the Hawks have not been very successful with an Iowa kid playing quarterback. About the best was Sherman & that isn't saying much.

Hopefully, history doesn't repeat itself.

He will have a few kinks to work out, but as said he has been working on that and the first games should be a good start for him. He may not pass Stanzi this year or anything, but overall, I think he will be good enough to get it done on the field.
