WILL MAY START?

That's what I ment...

An apostrophe would've made a significant difference. To get back on track, I agree with Shane and stormin. You can't necessarily judge a player by whether he starts, e.g. Will Sheehey, Davante Gardner, Kyle Wiltjer, Kevin Parrom. May is playing starter's minutes right now and he's playing great in his current role, so it seems best to leave him in his current role.

Help me out HN posters. What is FM seeing that the majority of us are not seeing? To suggest JO has been an "effective player" is insane if you ask me.

See, this is another example of how you know nearly nothing about basketball. It isn't so much about what josh brings to the starting starting line up, but what May contributes from the bench. Now insert your inappropriatly curios question about my underwear.

Jo is a better passer, ballhandler. He isn't as good defensively but isn't the drop off people think (he is better than most of the hawkeyes at defense). His shooting hasn't been better but he has the better shot and has a huge upside offensively where may is there to be efficient.

The only reason may would get the start would be for senior day. His minutes are already high and he gives the 2nd team a very strong leader that the 1st team doesn't need. And down the stretch he will be out there anyway. If jo finds his shot don't be surprised to see both of them on the court late.

Without gesell we need to separate clemmons and jo because they are both streaky offensively. So it makes sense that with clemmons on the bench jo is in the game.

Does he? What criteria are we using to come to that conclusion?

I've resolved to accept that he should start. Only because it allows Fran to confirm that he's off, early enough in the game, so as to figure out a productive rotation for the remainder.

What I will never accept is him playing 28 minutes, like he did against Indy.
1) Hoping and waiting for the something that just doesn't come is futility.
2) Woodbury and Basabe play 18, meanwhile, Zeller is going for 22 and 10. That's just top-to-bottom fail.

FM was asked in his Press Conference today about the possibility of E May starting against Illinois. His response was as follows:

"I still think that while Josh hasn't shot the ball as well as he can, he has still been a very effective player for us, so we will see."

Fran will revisit this site in the offseason and realize he listened to you a year too late and will get May in the starting line up next year as he was a year late with starting JO...Fran will realize he dropped the ball by not taking your advice in putting May in the lineup and will subsequently resign because you sir have the answers and will be embarrassed by not listening to you sooner.

So who do you really want to start? JO or EM seems you are a bandwagoner from season to season on who you will run over...

May is better off the bench. Period. End of sentence.

Having said that, this is what I would do on Saturday. Start May. Maybe even have him jump. (Nah .. that's going overboard.) At the first stoppage in play, sub in for him. That way, he gets the honor of starting his last regular season game at CHA, but you pull him so he can now come in off the bench as part of the second unit.

I know, a bit convoluted, but in my warped mind .. the logic works.

GO HAWKS!!!

I like May off the bench but I think he will start. We have to start our 5 best and use the others based on starters needing rest, if they're playing well off the bench and foul problems. These next 4 games are crucial and our best guys have to man up and play whatever minutes are required to get wins. I'm not sure Woodbury will play much tonight...only because this may be a bad match-up for him.

Fran has a history of not starting seniors on senior night just for the sake of honoring them. That being said, I would be fine with May starting to honor him on senior night.

It also makes sense to place Clemmons in the starting lineup. JO has averaged 24 minutes in his two recent starts. That's far too much time on the floor for a guy who brings what he does. May has averaged just a tick over 25 minutes (51 minutes in two games). Meanwhile, Clemmons is averaging 17 minutes.

I'm sorry, but Oglesby's play doesn't warrant 24 minutes per game, not when there are others who would benefit the team more with some of those minutes. Clemmons is at least as good a ballhandler as JO, and he's capable of making something happen (see steal and breakaway dunk vs. Purdue, literally 12 seconds after subbing in).

Wait a minute! You all say May plays so much better off the bench; maybe JO would benefit from that role, too. I'm sure it's just nerves and / or needing time to acclimate to the game-flow that night.

Oh, wait, see games 1 thru 27. (Sub or start still = 0-fer to low 20%).

Look at the Illini...they have Abrams,Richardson,Paul,Bertrand, and Henry as shooters/wings/pgs...Iowa has Dev,Josh,Eric,Clemmons that can matchup at all with these guys. Fran has to parcel out minutes to these four in such a way to allow us to have decent matchups at all times. Not easy. I wish he would go with Clemmons on Abrams and Josh on Richardson, Dev on Paul, White on Griffey, and Mel on Egwu. No good matchups for Woody, really. This is not a great matchup overall for Iowa...too many athletic wing types with no big slow center types for our big men to play. McLaurin,Egwu,Griffey...that is about it for bigs for them. Maybe we can pound them to dust on the boards...hope so.

Heny and Bertrand are dangerous off the bench...both have been very good of late at times...

Bertrand might start.
