That's the only thing I see keeping us from a west title
Um, he went for a fourth down in the first half that cost three points, then went for a sneak and the quarterback fumbled on the next play. If Tevaun Smith is in the game maybe they take more chances or catch some deep balls but nobody was getting any separation and MVB is the only guy with reliable hands who is on the same page as CJB.
Going for it on fourth down on your own 26 isn't old Kirk by a long shot.
Iowa didn't go conservative, it made no sense to try many deep routes because 1. zero separation and 2. zero time.
I think he is trending back toward conservatism. Sadly today's win will likely convince him he is heading in the right direction.
Hindsight is always 20/20. If Iowa had converted that 4th down, we would all be talking about what a gutsy, aggressive call it was. It could have resulted in a touchdown.
That was a big risk, big reward type of play call on the road against a tough defense. Iowa was handicapped offensively without Boone Myers, and as the game went on his absence was definitely felt... much more so than Tevaun Smith.
I liked the play call.
I guess we'll find out in the Illinois game if there is a trend. I think he's naturally conservative and he feels uncomfortable whenever he leaves that zone. Hope I'm wrong but playing not-to-lose has been good to him in the past, and it might prove to tempting to resist now that he is basically guaranteed a bowl game.Schobert was in the backfield all day....we were missing our starting LT and starting WR, not to mention our best TE is still trying to come back from shredding his patellar tendon....and there was a 30 MPH wind.....what would you have him do? A double reverse QB throwback? We beat a ranked team, on the road, down 4 starters.
