Will Kaleb Johnson Break 1,000 On The Ground Next Year And Other Musings...

Haven't had anyone put up 1,000 since 2017 when Wadley did it. In '16 he and LeShon Daniels both did. Weisman did it with all purpose yards but I'm talking strictly rushing. Next one before that was Coker and then way back to Shonn Greene.

I'm fully aware that the trend is because since Shonn left Ferentz has gone RB by committee (the lone exception being 2011 when Coker got all the carries).

I'm gonna get bold here for a minute...

Could Kaleb Johnson be the next Shonn Greene? He's built like a 6' brick shithouse as a true freshman (search his name in Google images) and he certainly runs like him. When was the last time we consistently saw an Iowa running back find holes like he does and carry that many yards after contact? Yeah I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself but KJ is a damn good running back and he fits the mold. This is also the internet and hot takes are what it's made for. Listening to his interviews he's smart, speaks well, is hungry for the ball, and doesn't seem to be afraid of shit. I say we get our mojo back and make the kid a bell cow a la Shonn next year. OL [should] be better, Lachey, Vines, Bruce, and Johnson will [hopefully] be healthy to take some heat off.

LFG.

Goodson hit 1,151 last year (4.5 ypc, 6 TD; another 247 receiving).

Not sure how people feel about extrapolating 2020 stats, but if you extrapolate Goodson's rushing to a 12 game regular season last year, he is at 1,143 yards. If you extrapolate to 13 games, 1,238 yards.

We once gave Canzeri like 30 plus touches in a game didn't we? One possession he had like double digit carries in a row or some shit. And he was like 5'7 185 tops. If we can do that with him and use a guy like Weisman like we did why can't we hitch our wagons to # 2 and see what he can do

43 carries for 256 yards.

His stats through that game (6 games total) 132 carries for 697 yards (5.3 ypc, 9 TDs)

His stats after that game (8 games total): 51 carries for 287 yards (5.6 ypc, 3 TDs)

I think Canzeri is one of the most underrated backs in the KF era; if he had been able to stay healthier, we would talk about him with the other top backs.

I don't think it is good to load any back up with 25+ carries per game if you can avoid it. KJ is awesome, but I also really like what we have seen from Leshon Williams, when healthy. And they trust Patterson enough to give him carries on the road last week. And I am not writing off Gavin Williams yet.

I think you certainly want to give KJ his opportunities, but there are other guys that can make plays, too. I am excited about seeing KJ get more involved in the passing game, he looks smooth catching the ball and working in space.

That's the game I was thinking of for sure by him. Granted that was nuts and due to other injuries and whatnot. Ideally that's not what they'd have planned on doing with him either it just kinda ended up that way.

And you're right. It's not ideal to give any RB 25 plus touches as far as it being in the players best interest. I'm just looking at it from the teams in the sense of production. I think the kid is capable of doing it and being great. But yeah 3 or 4 yrs of doing that would wear a guy down to hurt his pro potential etc. To what extent does Iowa care about that? It's a balancing act.

Yep I missed last year.

I've never understood that as a rule of thumb. If a guy is big and physical enough, and shows he can handle it why not?

It's worked to great effect with Blake Corum, Chase Brown, and Braelon Allen. I mean I get it if you have another guy who can average 5-6 yds per carry, but Iowa doesn't. Our next two guys are 3.1 and 3.7 ypc. You're giving up a shitload of first downs over the course of a season doing that, IMO.

It's just a mindset of saving the kid I guess... Hoping they don't get hurt. To what extent does the risk of getting hurt go up with 5-10 more touches a game? It's probably a tough thing to actually figure out.

If a kid gets his shoulder hurt in week 7 would it have been prevented had he had 5 less touches per game prior to that? Who knows... Could probably be argued either way with no consensus.

As a coach I'd want to ride my best player. What ya saving him for?

All you guys talking about next year. I've been negative most the season and for legit reasons, but I'm going to say he blows up and hits it this season with a few big games and a 200 yard performance against Nebby.

I'm on board with that

Was thinking the same thing.

He's definitely got the potential but that's rarified air. Shonn Greene was my favorite running back of the Fry and Ferentz eras. Unparalleled consistency. Luka Garza in cleats. When you posted an all time Iowa Mount Rushmore thread for Iowa backs a while back I had Greene on it.

Love Kaleb however. Love his vision. He gets better with more carries and as the game goes on. Last week won't be the last time this season he delivers a second half dagger, albeit early in the second half last week (but it still put the Boilers out of service)

My other three Iowa backs from that mount Rushmore? Nile Kinnick, Sedric Shaw, Nick Bell.

Outstanding running back and really a bright, articulate, engaging young man.

His skills are obvious: He is tough, physical and he showed his speed against Purdue.

After the game (it might have been earlier this week) Captain Kirk starts talking about the fact that the Williams running backs are now healthy and that he isn't ready to anoint Kaleb as the "next Shonn Greene."

Typical meathead response from Kirk. I like the Williams kids but they aren't even in the same universe as KJ from a talent standpoint. Maybe Kirk is simply trying to keep him grounded (who knows). I do understand that in the Big Ten, you don't want your star running back to get beat up and injured, although it sure seems like Wisconsin runs their star back a lot.....

I think he IS the next Shonn Greene, but for him to reach his potential at Iowa and have a career in the NFL, the following needs to happen:

1. In this era of cut throat NIL, Iowa has to make sure we don't lose him to another team.
2. Play the kid! He has to continue to be the featured back.
3. Get him out in space as a receiver as well. He looked great on the few balls thrown his way. Using him as a receiver early and often is going to keep those opposing linebackers honest.
4. Keep developing that O line. They opened up some holes against NW and Purdue that weren't there earlier in the year.

This cat is a special, generational talent. Surely the coaching staff and the two Ferentz meatheads see it?
Classic Kirk (and Hayden) Don't let the kid get full of himself after his coming out party. Wisconsin saw that game film as well, he will have their attention.

The thing with him and watching that play, he seems to always be going forward and not side-to-side. It seems we've had some RB's in the past years that dance around too much at the LOS and tended to go to the side too much. Kaleb finds his holes going forward.
Yep, every play doesn't have to be a home run.

Sometimes 7-10 yards is just fine.

Probably an equal chance of getting hurt on any given carry whether it's 5 or 50. But I was no math major, let alone statistics.

More likely scenario is Brian doesn’t use him enough the rest of the year and he transfers.
Well...your prediction that we were gonna get destroyed at Purdue by halftime aged like a dirty diaper on a hot day. So I'm feeling good.

Tough to leave Tavian Banks off of there for me too. Shaw was one tough SOB. Fry ran that dude into the ground it seemed like.
