Will hawks spy on McCaffrey with a Cash player?

McCaffrey is most of their running game today, is dangerous, but not the greatest passer. Do you take a player out of coverage and Lbkr run support to spy on #7?

Nebby's defense is decent but the hawks can overpower them and move the ball.

The tv analyst said Illinois has a top offensive line so maybe the hawks can run on Nebby but then maybe the Illini will be able to control our defense.

the Illini run some inside reverse sweep with the running backs that get them to the edge pretty well. QB Peters who was benched was is having a very good game.

Clearly, you want McCaffery to have to beat you with his arm, not his legs. We will definitely spy him...but our guys maintain passing lanes typically and there aren't the massive lanes for him to just take off. He's has to make lateral moves to get past the pass rush if we are doing our job.

NU's OL does a good job of influence blocking, opening huge holes for McCaffrey. As good as Nixon is, MN took him out of the game to a certain extent with this and Nixon was out of position, either too deep or too far down the line.

Discipline, assignment football. Not sure spy will work with McCaffrey. Make the kid throw in windows.

He'll get yards, kid is fast as hell and can hit open receivers. They'll do a bunch of RPO and run him 25+ times. Its not sustainable in a full B1G year but he's still fresh.

They have 2 primary weapons, McCaffrey and Robinson. Stop them, win turnover ratio....

Listen, McCaffery was already showing the wear and tear late in the Illinois game. You can't have a guy who has to throw the ball, taking that many hits. Phil will game plan to make sure McCaffery doesn't get running lanes...I'm sure he will break a few, but he's going to take some punishment.

Don't overthink this. McCaffrey is a good runner, but he is not dynamic. Don't go off script at this point continue to do what they been doing and they will be fine.

I agree and I noticed that last week and yesterday McCaffrey got off to fast start and good first halves, not necessarily scoring wise, moving the ball but then his offense slows down some.

McCaffery is not as big as Martinez and I predict somebody lays a really big hit on him that changes his attitude on running. Probably Belton.

I would not be amazed if Frost started Martinez against Iowa. He is well rested, not banged up, and can be dynamic, though erratic as hell. But running, scrambling QB’s can create problems.
I was thinking the same thing. Also wouldn't be surprised to see both of them over the course of the game. The good news is, the preparation is similar for both.

McCaffrey had a great first half and decent 2nd half against PSU a week ago and he was ok or better in the first half yesterday so I say he starts. They are not losing because of McCaffrey. But the hook could be quicker if they need a spark and even though this is against Kirk's religion and commandments Frost might alternate them some during drives and on different drives. McCaffrey seems and looks more like a gliding runner who weaves his way and makes crisp cuts but he is not as explosive as martinez in my memory.
