Will Brian F answer Qs

As running game coordinator, if the running game stinks and oline play stinks, will he have to answer questions now? Daddy seems to believe that he has great coaching ability and many believe KF will try to negotiate Brian's entitled takeover of KFs spot. I see regression from when Morgan coached the oline.

IIRC, Kirfer doesn't usually make coordinators available until bye weeks. Also, BriFer hasn't been known to shy away from questions in the past.
But I guess if you want to find something to ***** about…

I'll say it again, the offensive line woes in the running game were more related to the running back deficiency than their performance. I believe they protected the QB well last year. MW should not have been the feature back.

This will be a learning year for alot of these guys, especially the tackles, but next year...deep, experienced, and big. Add in James Daniels at 18 as opposed to 17, and I guess this Newborg kid is a bruiser. It's going to be pretty salty up front in 2016.

You're right, a job coaching OLine in the NFL is not a qualification to coach OLine at Iowa at all. Must be all nepotism. Also, as many other sports writers have noted (I believe Moorehouse covered this on the On Iowa podcast), Brian is quite open to answering questions, you just have to know how to make the questions relevant, and he'll give long and insightful responses. How about we wait to see some results on the field before start drawing conclusions about coaching ability?

Idk last year we had two offensive linemen now in the pros, one who was possible THE best lineman in all of college football. We also had a three year starting center who could also land a spot on a pro team next year. You would think with a line like that we would have been mowing down people but many games we could barely run at all.

Is that a statement about the Oline or about the fact that we had a fullback trying to carry like an RB? I like Weisman and all, but THAT was a horrible decision. A mediocre RB is just simply going to hit holes better than almost any FB, great or not.

I think Weismann was plenty good enough to run through a hole if it was there.

I loved MW for everything he was and in many ways we will miss him (getting an extra yard or 2 after contact). But his lack of vision and one cut ability is what our running game has lacked for years. Many lanes were missed last year on the stretch runs...many.

He was. He would run through a huge hole and pick up 7 yards. Average runningbacks would pick up 30. Those plays kill a runningback's averages and makes the oline look bad. Our 4th string runningback this year (who is pretty average ) ran for over 100 yards in his first game last year.

I don't get your last line. BF was a coach in all 13 games last year.

Yes, he was. But after only one season, one where his OLine was opening holes for Weisman (your discussion on him, btw, I'm completely agreeing with), I'd like to have a little bigger sample size to determine his effectiveness. All I'm saying is that you can't judge his performance after his first season. We don't judge head coaches that way, how can we judge assistants and position coaches like that?

Nah. Some of the crowd here is like the line in the old movie "Legal Eagles". First well convict him and then we'll give him a "fair trial".

I wonder.. Stopping a FB at RB w/ a stacked box. Throw in the called runs for MW to run outside, against a stacked box.. Over half the passing game was short passes that are essentially runs.

Jon has talked about this a lot, they're trying to run an offense in a phone booth. Hopefully CJ can open things up this year.

Perhaps I should edit this and say.. Hopefully KF LETS CJ open it up this year.

People tend to forget...Wiesmann did not get all the carries. Canzeri couldn't run behind that OL with 3 NFLers, neither could Daniels. The fact is, we had more talent on our OL than almost any team in the country, but the OL coach didn't have a clue what he was doing. A good OL can make ANY running back look good.

The problem was play-CALLING and scheming.

Take for example, the Maryland game. We run a drive down their throat with Weisman gashing them. Big. We promptly abandon the run. Completely.

Until Iowa doesn't think it's a good idea to try and block 9 with 5, they will have this problem. It comes down to playcalling and scheme.
