Why zero carries...

for Coker?

I haven't been on the boards really since I got back from Iowa City, but has there been any reason given for Coker not seeing the field on Saturday night.

I was hoping for a few touches, so his first Big Ten action wasn't on the road at Michigan.

i think it was more getting robinson used to the carries he will be seeing on a week to week basis. coker will only be used in a "breather" only situation, most likely a once or twice a half thing. While it would be nice to have either rogers or coker have some carries, they get to have reps in practice against the best big ten rush defense since 2007. Iowa has given up only 316 yards through 5 games, the fewest since tOSU in '07

Don't know. All of us were concerned about that last night as well. The 2nd teamer, whether that is Rogers or Coker, definitely should have had carries yesterday. Definitely, considering that they are both freshmen! They need the experience, even if just a series or two. Strange from a coach that values experience so much...
Thinking that ARob can carry the load the entire season, considering our luck, is a little unusual. Don't you think? Then why no carries for backup? A backup who definitely needs the experience.

We are game one in the Big Ten season. What happens if ARob goes down and we need that backup in game 2 thru 8???

I'm sure Ferentz didn't want them in, in case they fumbled. He knows Robinson rarely fumbles...he values that above almost everything else in a back. Look how conservative they were playing on offense...putting in a freshman running back would seem crazy to him.

Granted imo, we could have seen him some late in the game or at least some part for experience sake, but remember he sees them in practice everyday. So he'll put him in when he thinks he's ready (or he's forced to).

If they were so content with running into a pile for 3 yds and felt no real danger from PSU. Why not let them have a couple just tell them whatever you do dont fumble. Wegher was a true freshmen and he held on last year against those big bad Nittany Lions. I dont know if Robinson can carry the load I hope he can but what if he would have rolled an ankle or pulled something last night in mop up duty.......if anybody thinks were in trouble with just Arob what if he is not there?Again just a thought and an observation. KF knows hes doing.

The time of the game he would normally get carries was second half. We started deep in our own territory everytime in the 2nd half. With a 17-3 lead it is not a time deep in your own side of the field to take risks.

He only had a week of practice before the ball state game and the game itself was basically a practice. Kirk was probably thinking with the bye week coming up he could get him some more practice reps, before throwing him into an actual game situation. He knew A-Rob would have two weeks to heal up so the few extra carries weren't a big deal. I think we'll see a series here and there after the bye week.

Still we seem to pull the shirts off of kids and then just use them on KO or punt teams. Morris is an exception but other than some garbage time minutes how have we used CJ. I agree a carry or two for Coker and Rogers would have been good all the way around.

Really bad field position in the second, did not want an unproven guy out there with a chance to fumble. I honestly can't remember the last time Robinson fumbled the ball.

This pretty much covers it.

That drive by PSU to end the 1/2 and the one to start the 2nd 1/2 were game changers in lots of ways.
