Why is Gesell guarding Demps when the game is on the line?

We go up 46-41, late. Everyone in the gym knows that Demps is going to jack up a three. Our smallest guard, Gesell, who is an average defender at best, naturally is guarding him. He simply shoots right over Gesell and hits two critical threes to give NW the lead.

Either play a zone with White on top or put another player on Demps. We lost the Purdue game the same way (Davis makes a late three over Gesell).

Fran loses his head out there!

Yep, collins did a better job of subbing offense and defense, but on the first demps 3 Woody chose not to step out on him , team loss except for Uthoff.

He does a pretty good job of keeping his guy in front of him. Unfortunately at this level of play if you're not able to get a hand high in the face or up into the body of the shooter, you will get exposed now and then. He's not quite big enough to affect the shot or quick enough to get up into the shooter.

Why is Gesell guarding ANYONE when the game is on the line. Sapp is EASILY our best on ball defender and it's not even close. If Fran knew what he was doing, he'd play those two in "offense-for-defense" roles at the end of games. But that would require using some timeouts, possibly, and Fran apparently thinks he can transfer those into his retirement plan or something...

Mike is a better defender than AC.

He he was bad today though.

that second three Demps hit was defended just fine. Nothing you can do about that.

Why? Because the Iowa coach is either too stupid or stubborn to put someone with some size, length and ups on the point when that's exactly where NU was making a majority of their 3s. Mike was getting scorched there today.

Fran was totally out-coached today. OK4P may be on to something with his suggestion to hire Bill Carmody when Fran is fired, as he inevitably will be.

Someone out there thinks gessell is our best on ball defender huh? I will politely disagree. I've watched him for 3 years get torched by any pg with a pulse. Frankly I'm not sure why he's out there other than not having another option. Him and woody have been the biggest two recruiting disappointments I can remember. Fran is riding them right out the door.

This. On any other D1 team, those two are deep reserves.

A 6 foot slow guard our best defender? really? are you joking? No wonder we lose every close game

Ummmm...do you see how he claps in his guys face after a made basket and then gets in a really great defensive stance. That's the sign of a great defender in my book. Forget about the blow by that comes after it, defense is all about clapping in faces and getting in a classic defensive stance.
