Why Iowa ties are important

I think it is very important to hire a coach who has, at one point, lived, worked, or coached in Iowa. I don't think it is the most important aspect by any measure, but it is very important. I believe part of our success in football the last 30 years hasn't been the coaching continuity, but because the coaches we have understand the community and the fans, and in turn are embraced by them.

When you look at the last 30 years of Hawkeye basketball, however, the exact opposite is true. Lute Olson had success here, but he never embraced the community. He was uncomfortable in Iowa City, and he left for another school. George Raveling didn't fit in well either, despite his relative success, and he left on his own after 3 seasons.

Tom Davis, on the other hand, fully embraced the community, and was in turn worshipped. Although he never won a conference title, and made the sweet 16 3 times in 13 years, he is still revered in Iowa, and even more telling, people are still bitter he is gone.

Then comes Alford and Lickliter, who were Indiana guys. Neither one of them seemed to embrace the state, and in turn, the state pretty much hated them right back.

I don't know how to explain it, but to be the man at Iowa, you need a certain je nes sais quoi to connect with the people here, and I hope that the next coach has it. One way to be sure is to get a guy who has experience in Iowa in the past, and knows how the people behave.

Instead of Gillispie lets go with Jeff Moe, he is a superstar drinker and has Iowa ties.

Common sense tells me this shouldn't matter, but, you're right Ghost. Perhaps it has a lot to do with the provincial nature of Iowa?

I agree.

The people in Iowa City are not a difficult bunch to get along with, and as an alumni base, I'd say we're pretty easy going as well.

WHat Iowa fans want is someone who doesn't have a wandering eye,,, that is all.

And the only thing that Iowa fans love more than a guy without a wandering eye, is a guy that is highly sought after but tells them that Iowa is good enough for me (a la KF)

I understand your point completely Ghost. It worries me to limit our candidates in this capacity though.

Keno, Forbes, Close. Who else has Iowa ties that would be a legitimate candidate?

I don't think it is nessecarily important we hire a guy with Iowa ties, but I think we need to take the time to make sure that in addition to being a great coach, he will also fit in with the community. I don't think there was much thought into making sure Alford and Lickliter could function well in IC.

What a bunch of nonsense. The football success can be attributed to having good coaches and recruiting the right athletes for the program. Our basketball success will be no different, assuming the right guy is brought in. CHA will fill with anyone who puts a winner on the court, whether or not that guy has ever been in Iowa before. Alford and Lickliter weren't despised strictly because they were "Indiana guys" or didn't embrace the state. They were disliked because of extreme underachievement.

Yep--I remember the first thing I said when I found out Alford was gone. My buddy called me up to discuss the news, and I said something to the effect of "I don't really care, because he never wanted to be here anyway."

We need someone who wants to be a Hawkeye. I could never really get a read on this from Lick, but I know Alford didn't want to be a Hawkeye.

While we are at it we could go with Chris Kingsbury. He is much better than tucker or gillispie. Kingsbury passed out on the sidewalk in plain site not in an ally.

Plus he could help us shoot from half court.

Iowa ties are very important. Every dapper Hawkeye should have at least one!

Our FB team is successful because we have a coach that is highly sought after and is happy enough being the head coach of Iowa to give us a sense of continuity with the program.

Don't dismiss the Chris Kingsbury talk.

I agree completely. It can be tough though. I honestly felt Lick would fit in when he arrived three years ago. He seemed humble, said the right things, and even complimented the football team. Unfortunately, I never got the impression that he really embraced Iowa City. That may have been because of the troubles on the court though.

I never said they were. They were not, however, given the benefit of the doubt because nobody liked them. Steve Alford was run out of town the season after he won 25 games. Nobody had patience for him because nobody liked him.

Lute from Iowa? Davis from Iowa? Kirk from Iowa? Give me a break get somebody who views this job as a destination job and can recruit anywhere.

As I think back on it. I just don't think Lick did anything. I don't think he gave 100%.

Ferentz is highly sought after because he's a good coach, and the football team wins games because he's a good coach. His happiness as the head coach at Iowa likely starts with the fact that he's getting paid very handsomely. Our sense of continuity means very little, if at all.
