Why does everyone shoot well against the Hawkeyes?

My own theory is the lack of respect for our talent, teams come in relaxed and confident, knowing we don't have top-notch talent, we have MVC talent trying to guard Big Ten talent, plus we have little to no home court atmosphere, it is what it is, people arent going to pay or support this product, Im optimistic that Fran is the right guy to turn this disaster around.

Teams definitely aren't tight or scared to play Iowa, but I would say the best reason for high % shooting is that teams aren't being challenged on 80% of those shots. I could go out there and shoot very well against our defense, especially playing against a zone because there are going to be open shots against a zone all the time.

I think Iowa has had two problems in this area:

-Mental lapses, helping out by sagging in the middle to help out defensively, leaving good shooters wide open for a kick-out.

-Lack of team speed. Gatens is a good player, but his foot speed is not that great. Others on the team also aren't very fleet of foot. They are a split second too late getting up on guards, which is all good guards need to shoot the three.

I was thinking about this while watching ISU/Kansas. KU (and other teams) never left Scott Christopherson's area in the half-court set. He only got open a couple of times in transition. He only had 9 points on 4 of 13 shooting. Had Iowa done better on SC, they would have won. (Also, SC isn't healthy now, but he was defended well last night).

It is frustrating to watch people guard matt ( nobody fears our inside game) because they know he is one of the best shooters in the Big ten, I wish he could hurt them with his dribble but he seems to just go side to side instead of to the rim.

Next year the Hawks have a nice set of guards in Cartwright and Gatens, but the 3 freshman still have a long ways to go. We need to find at least three more Big Ten type players.

IMO, it doesn't help at all that we have not had an inside presence since . . . Erek Hansen? He was a defensive presence I guess. But not guarding against the 3 at all, then being ripped apart on the inside to start the 2nd half against NW -- we need size, speed, and athleticism that can't really be coached into people.

Defense is effort, if the effort isn't there on that side of the floor which it isn't this team will struggle. The first 24 points scored by NW were from by some form of a 3 pointer, just sad.

Because Iowa plays p*ss-poor perimeter defense even against a team that lacks any semblance of an interior game besides backdoor cuts.

My theory is that we don't guard anyone. I have evidence to back up my theory.

I spent much of the game last night wondering why, in the midst of their 3 point marathon, we were still sitting in zone. I guess I always thought you played zone when you wanted to keep a team's bigs from beating you on the inside and make a team stroke the outside shot. But NW had no bigs on the inside to speak of, and they seemed to be making anything thrown at the rim from the outside.

Spank, why were Gatens and May consistently helping down low only to leave someone open for a 3? Did you notice that as well?

I don't have any idea. I didn't get it either. They were in the 2-3 zone and they would sink down (maybe to avoid getting backdoored?) - when they moved to Man 2 Man, then they couldn't get around screens and the 3 balls were wide open too.

Defense is about wanting it. May is still injured, he has been invisible on the D end.

Simple. Our DEFENSE sucks so bad. Anybody could drain 3s all night long being as wide open as we leave them. After this much of the season, stats don't lie. DEFENSE SUCKS.

Remember earlier this year when May got (I believe) seven steals in a game? It's almost hard to believe now.

Not entirely.

Check out Iowa's defensive stats under scouting report:
2011 scouting report for Iowa

Green = Good, Red = Bad.

Who are you going to believe, a website or your lying eyes.

Here is a good stat I calculated. In Iowa's 9 losses, their opponents average 80 points (79.888 to be exact), whereas in their 7 wins, opponents average 48 points a game.

How can you sit there and tell me that the defense is any good? Whenever we play a team with a pulse, we cannot stop them.

He was averaging 3 steals per game through the first 1/4 of the season, he hasn't had a single steal in 5 of the last 6 he's played in.

Iowa's interior D is average to above average.
Iowa's exterior D is garbage.

I have got the answer. By analyzing the video our opponents footwork has been tremendous when they play the Hawks. Using my keen analysis skills I have noticed that each opponent who makes a three against us has their lead foot turned a quarter inch inward allowing for the ball to go through the hoop at a higher percentage:)
