Why do we take the ball if we win the toss?

It also has to do with Ferentz's NFL background I think. NFL teams seem to always want the ball first if they win the toss. I think it's just another thing Ferentz brought with him.
Although it is true that he originally wanted the ball first because of our horrible defense when he first arrived.

It is working Iowa has given up 0 points in the 3rd quarter this season and the opponent has had the ball first each time. I think I trust Kirk and the defensive staff to make adjustments to stop opposing Os. I love what they do. Plus most teams defer if they win the toss so we end up with the ball if lose the toss.
But my advice to the captains when on the road- Tails never fails.

Did you know that there is an ever so slight advantage of picking tails (with US quarters at least)? They are slightly unbalanced to land tails-up. Not so sure this is right if it's some commemorative game coin though.

Remember when Iowa won the toss n deferred against MSU some years ago? It broke a several game long streak of taking the ball first (all wins, if I remember correctly). We lost and Kirk said after the game he would not defer again
