Why do people say Weisman only gets yards against weak competition?

Michael Joseph Alstott (born December 21, 1973), nicknamed "A-Train", is a former American football fullback in the National Football League. He spent his entire 12-year career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played college football at Purdue. During his career, Alstott was selected to six Pro Bowls and was the starting fullback/running back with the Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII.

The two are not comparable at this point in time.

The Hammer has proven he can get yards vs anyone. He, obviously, gets more yds vs weaker completion (and when healthy), but he can do it vs anyone.
Anyone that says different is trolling you and knows nothing about the football. Nothing!

The guy is a gamer no matter who we play. He'd get over a hundred yards if we played Alabama.

In agree he showsv up and plays hard every game. I think he could run for a 100 plus on just about anybody. Whats so cool about is he came out of nowhere. From a 3rd string FB to the man in the backfield. GO HAWKS!

I think he'll prove you wrong. Should we bet on it?

Ha! Are you serious? I would be willing to bet serious money, whatever that is to you, that he doesn't get 50 carries in the NFL by the time he is out of college for five years. There are a LOT of guys in college that look as good as him that don't get a sniff in the NFL. And if you think he would get 100 yards against Bama, well that just shows how little you know. And for the record, that isn't me dogging Weisman. That is me dogging you.

This so idiotic it isn't funny. You picked the ONE guy that you can say did the same thing you say Weisman will do. Because he did it, your argument is that Weisman will do it. I would be willing to bet (here i go again) that if you went back in the history of college football there are guys like Weisman all of the time that play at a very high level in college that don't get a sniff in the NFL. But your case is so weak you can't be shot down by anything logical because you don't present logical arguments.

Why stop at Alstott? Why not say he is Jim brown? That was another fullback type that had huge NFL success. But you won't make that case because it is a stupid case to make.

End of story.

Kid plays with heart. We will see how much heart by the time he leaves iowa. Tell me how many great players did not have heart? Undersized, not the fastest and all those other things can and are made up for with heart. Anyone remember the little train that said i think i can? Can or cant either way your right. Nice to see this team decide they can. Just hope they can focus, win or lose.

Larry Csonka, Daryl Johnston, John Riggins, Tom Rathman, Robert Newhouse, Toby Gerhart. Many, many more.
Don't discount Weisman. Would not surprise me at all if he ends up on an NFL roster someday. (would not surprise me if he didn't either)

Weisman is a good back and he's a good fit for the Iowa running game. I think they need to get Daniels more acclimated too, we will need him once the B10 gets going. Weisman has, what, 427 yards rushing in three games, but let's keep it in perspective. If Todd Gurley or a top RB in the country was running behind these holes and offensive line push, he'd probably have 627 yards right now. I'm not banging on Weisman...I'm just stating my opinion that he's a bruising fullback type with very average speed for a RB...and he doesn't exactly make guys miss. Put someone with size, speed, and the ability to make guys miss (ala S. Greene) and you have a whole different ballgame for the Iowa offense.

Why do they say he only gets yards against weak competition? This might have something to do with it:

Mark Weisman Game By Game Stats and Performance - Iowa Hawkeyes - ESPN

Yeah, I seem to remember him getting a little nicked up late last year, but his big games were against cupcakes last year. I'll grant you the MSU game last year, but after that, he never reached 100 yards in a game again. Not ineffective, no. But there was a clear difference late in the season compared to early on.

That doesn't mean I'm saying he CAN'T produce against good competition.. Just that I think he's still relatively unproven. If Weisman and the O-line stays healthy this year, we'll find out what we need to know.

Alstott was faster than Weisman and also had better hands to catch the ball out of the backfield.

I remember the Nebby game last year. Yes, our offense was pitiful, but it did have a pulse of an identity that day because Weisman played significant minutes.

Alstott: 4.66 (1996 NFL Combine)

Weisman: Low of 4.58. High of 4.79 in his 3 timed 40's. (NFLDraftScout.com)

Looks as though they are pretty close, speed wise.

no way Weisman runs a 4.58 right now. no way.

why are some of you guys making this a "if you don't think Mark is the next Alstott, you must hate him" contest. good grief. Tebow was one of the greatest college players (stats wise) of all time, yet just couldn't stick in the NFL. plenty of players are great in college but just don't translate.

Mark could definitely make the NFL as a FB if more were featured in the NFL, but that just ain't how things are right now. it's no slight to Mark. we've had some GREAT RB's here at Iowa that didn't stick in the NFL. it's just how it goes sometimes.

Without reading thread, my first thought was Weisman was injured so he missed some action against some of the quality opponents but even games like Nebraska he had decent yardage and keep in mind we had no passing game last year to help him.

Yay, you have no faith in him and you hate me. Gosh you're cool.
