Why do few on this board like Brommer?

He is a pretty big body, he's fast for his size and he hustles. Those are three pretty strong qualities for a big guy. He's also a true Sophomore that was thrown to the wolves last year and probably should have redshirted. He gets a body on his guy on defense and doesn't get pushed around too much.

I know he makes mistakes at times on positioning and you can see that he has some weakness on the offensive side of the ball but experience can certainly correct those two parts of his game.

I would rather have a big guy that likes to play down low than a big guy that plays outside the perimeter.

I can't say that I think he is very good, but he isn't god awful. He can give a few minutes here and there. I said before that the only thing Cougil has on Brommer is a better 3 point shot. I saw Brommer get some boards last night that I don't usually see Cougil getting.

The guy has absolutely no idea what to do with the ball in his hands. I cringe every time he sees the court, and he might be the worst bball player in all D1. He's pretty decent from the FT line, though. I'll give him that. I know there has been a lot of Brommer love on this board as of late, so I'm sure I'll get some heat from saying these things.

Your will get heat for saying these things because they are utterly rediculous not because Brommer has been getting a lot of love.

Brommer needs a lot of polish but one thing I really like about his is when he gets the ball in his hands he looks to score. He doesn't finish enough of them but he's definately agressive. I also think he plays big and rebounds well.

Since he isnt even the worst player on our team its hard to take you seriously

1 of 4 things happen everytime the ball is passed to Brommer...

1)He goes up for the shot and get stuffed
2)He is standing wide open under the bucket, and the pass goes off his knee
3)He catches the pass and misses an easy layup
4)He goes up and gets hammered and is sent to the line, where he is a decent FT shooter.

This kid is a D2 talent playing in D1. It wasn't his fault that he accepted the scholarship to Iowa. It was Lick's fault for not realizing he's not capable of playing D1 basketball.

I was going to post the same thing.

I'm not saying the kid is all world but I see a lot of Chris Street in him. He hustles, scraps, doesn't get pushed around and iirc most of our big men don't develop an inside game until year 3, 4 or 5. I know we have Cole, Cougill and another guy coming in, I just hope that he sticks around to show what he can deliver on the floor.

I actually like what I've seen of him just recently. He's strong, he's long, and he's aggressive--if anything, maybe a little too aggressive, but it's easier to train that out of a kid than it is to instill aggressiveness.

He still has a lot of work to do but I could see us getting two solid years out of him. I'm coming around to hoping he doesn't transfer.

Well, I guess we'll never know how good he could be at Iowa since he'll be averaging 7 points and 5 rebounds at a D2 school next year.

I all honesty, I respect everyone's opinion and would be happy to eat crow if he ends up being good. I just don't see it.

How many of Iowa's big men were any good as sophmores. Brommer may or may not get better. When Les Jepsen was freshman he could hardly walk. But he worked hard and had a short tenure in the NBA.

if he works on his offensive skills, he can become a big contributor on this team. he is a D1 player.

Freddy,

I always pay attention to and respect your posts (mostly on hawkeyinsider), but I have to disagree on this topic.

I dont mind him playing.

Anything that keeps little lick of the court makes me happy.

Brommer can play the 4 Fuller the 3 gatens 2 May 1 if we are desperate

Could you imagine a lineup of:

Payne - decent handles, slightly undersized
May - wicked athletic and a shot that is coming around
Fuller - most versatile 3 in the league next year
Brommer - good banger on the boards, good D matchup for their 4s
Cole - same as this year. boards, screens and D

I'm leaving Gatens out only because he is playing injured but he, May and Fuller could cover the 2 and 3 spots. Brommer, Cole, Cougill and new kid could cover the 4 & 5 and Payne and new kid could cover the PG. That's a nice 9 man rotation with fresh legs and lots of matchup issues for the opponent. But instead we are going to get this:

Payne
May
Gatens
Fuller
Cole
Which is the exact same lineup that we have this year. Can you really improve that much in one season without changing some of the parts around?

We're also going to get a lot of strange substitution patterns, a lot of scratching our heads and a 14 win season next year....count on it.
