why did we wait to throw deep?

bob, I think the lb's in pass coverage were the issue. UNI ran patterns that caused the db's to vacate an area and then sent Johnson 1 on 1 on a lb. I thought our cb coverage was good and the safties were ok, but need work.

When that KEPT happening to our LBs, I kept thinking, "Good, heavens, Phil, walk a safety up!"...but our safeties were having their issues, too.

OTOH, David Johnson IS as good as others were saying. But, if our back 7 doesn't get some serious work this week...everything from securing tackles to staying "in lanes"...it will be a wasted week.

In spite of that, there were a couple bright spots. Our D personnel doesn't look like they are stuck in place (decent speed), we have speed on the outside, and none of the RBs took much of a beating. On the not-so-bright, we need a punter.

We have waited to throw deep since Stanzi was here, ages ago.

Stanzi threw deep until the middle of his line turned into a turnstile.

Mcnutt on stop and goes and DJK crossing across the deep zone.

Other teams throw those more often to loosen up a D. Iowa gets the D stuck into cheating into the box and then hits them with the deep pass.

The concern with Jake is he won't hit it when it is called and there. Like I have said elsewhere, he reminds me of Jeff Garcia. Better watch out or our young stud receiver might go T.O. on him.

Jake Rudock and Sam B. Richardson finished 99th and 100th, respectively, in yards per completion this week (before tonight's game, don't know how those guys did). Minimum 15 attempts

Off the top of my head plays that would have changed jR's YPP average:

the first drive pass to KMM where the defender pushed KMM out before the ball got there (PI called- could've been a 15-20 yd gain)

the over throw of Bullock on a wheel route (?). -could've been a 30-40 yd gain; AND Bullock had a step on the defender- could've been much bigger.

The T.Smith PI call in the 4th. Could've been a 30-40 yd pass- AND Smith had a step on his man.

My point:
If these passes are completed, that's 100+ yds to JR's stats and we don't have this thread or comments about how he's too scared/conservative to look deep.

You could probably sprinkle that scissors route where Hamilton (?, whoever our TE was on that play) and our WR were running a scissors concept and they collided. The guy tracking Hamilton went over the top of the rub and wouldn't have been in position to make a play on the ball and probably wouldn't have been able to keep us out of the end zone there. Another handful of yards and an additional TD would have added to the stats as well...

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, I'd be even fatter than the Clown fan in my avatar.
