Who will be the Number 2 QB?

Officially it will be Weinke/Derby all season long. But if JV goes down, I think it will be Weinke who steps in.

By next year at this time, that could be a VERY interesting question...in looking at this limited throwing tape from practice today, notice Rudock's technique on his drop back...the ball is high and tight by his ear hole...which means far less wasted motion on his delivery, which comes from the same place and he doesn't have to move the ball. Derby's motion is more over the top. Granted, this is just one video, a few throws and not enough to make big judgements. But Rudock appears to have a solid technique foundation in this area.

wow, that video got me really excited about this season and vandenberg. he just looks so smooth and crisp. i would say by the 3rd game, we don't have anything to worry about in the QB position.

based on the video and strictly throwing form, IMO weinke is #2 and derby is 3. however, based strictly on form i'd put rudock 2nd but he will not have an impact on this season

Rudock seemed to get the ball away pretty quickly. Hard to tell with only a few snaps though.

Derby is next man up, I think that is pretty obvious.

I would love to know why that seems so obvious to you. It isn't to me mainly because Ferentz values experience and seniority so much. Although I agree Derby is probably the more talented of the two.

Going off of that video and things I saw in the spring along with some pre- game looks last season it seems that Derby has really improved his balance and footwork. Wienke concerns me a bit as he has always seemed to kind of aim the ball and seems a bit slow in his drop back. Rudock and Vandy could switch jerseys and you would have a hard time telling them apart- quick measured steps, great balance and zip.
(I know that those are all small sample sizes- just my impressions)

I just hope that early in the season we (and the coaches) have the opportunity to see both Derby and Weinke in for a couple series.

Jon, I think it would have been interesting if you would have posted that video without listing the jersey numbers in the description.

Obviously we would have known Weinke.. but it would have been fun to see if us fans could pick out who we thought was the best based solely on the video, instead of having a pre-determined notion of who was who. (or whom?) Ahh, **** it!

Weinke throws like Matt Rodgers did - he long-arms it like he's throwing a baseball. I think Derby has passed him, but out of respect (and to keep him motivated to compete and not transfer) they keep him part of second team.

If Jake picks up playbook and doesn't have a Wegher-like frosh year, I expect him to win second team job in spring.

Agree

Throwing technique aside, I think that the true test will come when the shots start and these guys have 280 pound D lineman bearing down on them. I just hope the coaching staff lose their traditional stubborness and let the backups play (and perform) if the games permit. The backups need game reps too and I don't mean just going in and handing the ball off.

Rudock has already endured that. At St. Thomas, they played a schedule full of D1 scholly players from around the SEC, ACC, and B1G. He has showed he can take a hit and as I have state 100 times, he will be one of the best QB's of all time at Iowa. You just have to know the kid and the package he brings. His numbers will be crazy. His decision making is unreal. And the thing is, if he didn't play football he will be very successful as a doctor or a surgeon. He could be one of those guys that has an option of being a high round pick in the draft in 4 years or taking a residency at Mayo and he choses Mayo. Amazing character. Refreshing to see.

I think you have that exactly right. For a frosh, Rudock really appears to have a nice delivery and sound fundamentals. He could easily push the other two next season for the backup role.
