Who will be Fran's first 4 or 5 star recruit?

It has been a fun summer following Fran's staff work the recruiting trail. They hit a homerun with Baasbe, now hopefully they can do the same with the 2011 class. Burke,Thomas,or Harris would be huge step in the right direction and a real coup for a staff that has only been together for a few months.

Coleman,Oglesby,Brooks,Travis,Barron, Moats, and Mcdonald seem like good role players but can you contend in the big ten with 2-3 star recruits? Ferentz has developed the football program into a national player for the top recruits, hopefully Fran can do the same.

Basabe wasn't a four or five star recruit, but he does look like a home run. We'll probably have to hit more of the "inside the park" variety like him than count on lots of "stars" for a while.

I hope Woodbury ends up a 4-star or better but I'm not convinced yet that he will be.

FWIW, Rivals already has him as a 4 star.

Paige's stock is only going to rise and the 2012 class isn't bursting with top flight PGs, so I get very, very worried that Iowa won't land him. The Hawkeyes were one of the firsts to talk w/ Paige, when he was pretty young. They weren't the first to offer, though. The coaching change will affect the recruiting (more promising system, but report from former regime is gone). I am really hoping Iowa can finally bring one of these Linn-Marr players in, though...the Hawkeyes have done pretty poor as of late in that area.

Woodbury just got an offer from Tubby the other day; his recruitment is heating up. I would assume that Adam is going to be Fran's #1 big man target. He will have plenty of time to recruit him.

Both kids are going to be heavily sought after. I don't have a good feel either way on either player, though.

To put this in perspective, ESPN has Paige ranked as the #2 PG in the 2012 class, behind only L.J. Rose, but he's only the 24th ranked player overall. Definitely not a good year for the PG position...

I'm surprised that he's a 4-star. I think Iowa's chances with him are good--probably the best shot of any of the three local kids on MB.

I don't have much hope for Paige right now, but I think we might have a shot at Woodbury. A lot of it depends on how the team does with Fran's new style of play.

To put this in perspective, ESPN has Paige ranked as the #2 PG in the 2012 class, behind only L.J. Rose, but he's only the 24th ranked player overall. Definitely not a good year for the PG position...

If Kansas comes calling for Paige, which they very well could, his recruitment might end pretty quick.

Unless somehow despite the late start at recruiting for Iowa, McCaffery nonetheless is able to find a late-emerging recruit in the 2011 class (or Oglesby or Brooks continue to raise their profiles sharply), the best bet is that there will not one but three bigtime kids in the 2012 class (it would be a startling development if Woodbury didn't choose his Hawkeyes, and his pal Gesell s not a sure thing but he clearly is Iowa's to lose...and that will lead Paige to keep this close trio together, to continue as teammates at Iowa.

I'm guessing that Brooks (depends upon grades/board scores probably) and Oglesby are the guards in the 2011 class--but the bigger question (and concern) is who will be the front court pair to be signed? And also a major determinant in how far and how soon the Hawkeye comebck proceeds is who will be the other big man IAT Woodbury in 2012. (in Besabe, McCabe & Marble there are three forwards of Big Ten quality, but no center and no PF besides Besabe, who isn't all that tall for an inside guy--with May & Payne only sophs, adding Oglesby, Gesell, Brooks & Paige would give the Hawkeyes a backcourt with talent enough to win in the BT and the NCAA tournament).

The simple answer is yes you can win in the BT with 2 and 3 star recruits, but it won't be right away. All Iowa's recruits for 2010 are all going to be good players just like Payne and May.
I do believe Iowa will get some 4-star kids but not all the time. The 3-star kids Iowa is looking at today can play. Remember three star kids prevail in the last 50 of Top 150 rankings.
NIT first year is an attainable goal.

Hate to be the pessimist but I don't believe McCaffery gets this high of caliber player for quite a long time (5+ years). If Iowa starts winning, then the wins and uptempo game will help pull in these types of recruits. But until that starts happening, I just don't see it. Hopefully coach proves me wrong!

Based on most of your posts since at least the Royce White situation, you seem to quite enjoy the role of playing the pessimist.

I think the longer Paige waits the better chance we have. I say this because then it gives Fran time to show how he likes to run things and if Paige likes what he see's our chances go up, if he doesn't what do we have to lose?

My feeling is if FM doesn't get a true strong ready to play big man in the 2011 class, that the 2012 kids will slip by. I think this is particularly going to come to pass if the ISU experiment doesn't blow up. There will just be too much negative press regarding Iowa. If he gets that dominant big man in the middle. That will stem the negative talk.
