Who replaces Sash and Greenwood?

I don't know the exact number, but that's something like 80 combined starts between the two of them. So who's next in line?

Tom Donatell, a senior next year, was listed as Sash's backup for the bowl game. He's seen some PT and been in the system for a few years, but there are also some young guys coming up that could potentially step in.

Tanner Miller has been backing up Greenwood all year at FS and seen some solid minutes. He's already added a lot of bulk and will continue to do so with an offseason under Doyle.

Jordan Bernstine has been close to being a starter for the last 2-3 seasons and gotten a lot of time on special teams, but he's always been hampered by injuries. What position does he play next year? We're set at corner with Prater and Hyde, so does he make the switch to safety? I would hope so since that's a position of need without a lot of depth. We have plenty of depth at corner with Castillo, BJ Lowery and Lowe.

Jack Swanson and Nick Nielsen are 2 others that will be fighting for a spot.

Young guys with little experience but potential: Anthony Hitchens (if he moves back to safety from RB), Jason White (same deal as Hitchens), Nico Law (incoming recruit, hard hitter, looks to be a future SS), Torrey Campbell (incoming recruit, most likely a corner).

I don't know if either Bernstine or Miller would be able to switch to SS, but I would think Miller would be the most likely if he gets bigger. I'm hoping these 2 are on the field at the same time, preferably with Miller playing strong and Bernstine playing free. Donatell, Swanson and Nielsen are 3 guys that will be competing hard in the offseason. It'll be interesting to see if Nico Law can step up early also, but with no time in the system there would likely be some growing pains early on. I'm interested to see how this competition plays out.

What do you guys think? What does our starting secondary look like in 2011?

I was thinking Bernstine would be the better SS. More help on the run. I think he's more of the Bob Sanders style than Sash was. I really have no idea, but you have to think that Bernstine has an edge as he has playing time at several spots and the athleticism, if the ankle isn't an issue.

Bernstine will get his shot that's for sure. This is his one last chance at living up to the expectations laid out for him before he leaves Iowa. My guess is that he will be the favorite early on in the spring and into fall camp. If he retains it is another story. I'm assuming Tanner Miller will continue to get looked at as well. He already has some game time on his resume. I then think Nico Law gets some time back there in relief as well. His videos out of high school are pretty impressive and he already has decent size for a guy just coming in.

Didn't Hitchens see some time on Defense in a nickel or dime package during the bowl game? I think he and Bernstine were on the field at the same time in the second half.

I saw Lowery get some PT in dime but didn't notice Hitchens. That will be good for him going into spring if he got some bowl reps. I agree with Hawkfromnorwalk about Nico Law. He will definitely get some PT as a true frosh. Whether it's mostly on special teams or getting reps on defense, I don't know.

I think Bernstine and Miller will be the 2 starters but I am curious to see which one plays strong and which plays free. They both have more experience at free, but they're both pretty physical also. Miller is 6'2, 195 and Bernstine is 5'11, 205. I expect Miller to put more weight on, but whichever is more instinctive and physical will likely be SS.

Also, if Bernstine plays SS this season, that spot will be open again in 2012, and Nico Law would be ready to step in there if he gets some quality game experience and shows he is ready.

Hitchins most certainly played in the bowl game. I was there and noticed him in quite a bit actually and thought he looked good

Bernstine definitely has the Bob Sanders kind of game. The guy can hit like a freight train, great athlete.

I'm not sold 100 percent that Bernstein gets the job, I actually hope he does, but it seems to me like there maybe a reason he hasn't seen much PT in his career. Just for the sake of discussion who else will be competing for the spot.

I think he's the favorite going into next season but I also think that much like in the past he will probably get passed up by a better up and coming player or due to injury.

My bets:

FS: Tanner Miller, Jack Swanson/Nick Nielsen
SS: Jordan Bernstine/Anthony Hitchens, Tom Donatell/Nico Law

Lastly, I'm curious about Kirksey. Depending on his physical development, maybe they'll try to get him to play some SS.

I think it will be Tanner Miller/Bernstine/Law.

Hitchens played a hybrid role during the bowl game, he was lined up as an OLB but could cover like a DB.

I am still hopeful that Derby brings his talents to defense. Whether that be safety or LB I dont care. Unless he beats out weinke for the backup qb spot he is too good of an athlete to waste a year or eligibility as our 3rd qb. My guess for the two safety spots are the same as most everyone. Bernstine and Miller. I think Donatell could sneak his way in there too.

I really like this. I think Hitchens could make a good DB and Kirksey outside of Morris could be good. This of course when Nielsen graduates.
