Who is our Best OL?

Admittedly, I have no clue how scouts rate OL. But I noticed once again this week Scherff getting beat for a sack. I know he is being tabbed as a first round pick, but is he far and away our best linemen? I have not noticed any particularly large gaping holes on the left side compared with the right. How is Donnel playing or Blythe? I don't know that anyone has really set themselves apart. And please dont site the youtube video where 6'7, 320lb Scherff pancakes a 5'11, 175lb cornerback. I'm talking about overall OL play. Has anyone been tearing it up?

Ha, yeah no kidding. HN may be the only place on earth where, after a W moving us to 5-1, someone wants to troll about the OL/Scherff.

I would bet money that the sack the OP is referencing is the one where Scherff correctly passed a rusher to the LG, who didn't see him and ended up blocking nobody.

Those who complain the loudest tend to understand the least. In most aspects of life.

Ok. I have to admit I do not watch the OL much or dont have an idea what makes a good OL. So I can relate to what the OP is asking. It is not obvious to me that Schreff is Mr. ALL-AMERICAN. But I am no expert.

I do notice when Iowa passes that the QB seems to have all day. So Iowa does seem to be very good at pass blocking.

Iowa's run blocking seems to be a work in progress.

Ferentz said in his post game comments that Walsh could have come back in the game if he was really needed. The fact that he was not needed suggests that maybe Walsh is not the best OL on the team.

When Schreff went out against Ball State, he was rushed back, which suggests that it is important to the coaches that he be in the game. So it may seem obvious but it appears the answer is Schreff.

Yeah right, he could of come up with a better topic like how Chuck Long was a terrible QB.

what is also says is that it is Brandon's final year sporting the black and gold, and final shot at the clowns. It was his call - he was cleared.

Ding ding ding. One of the announcers said Scherff but it wasn't him /wasn't on him.

1) scherff - by far a legit nfl talent
2) Blythe - kid is just nasty and smart
3) Donnal - still has some growing to do but has good skills.
4) Gaul - I will go with him because he looked better than welsh or Walsh have looked. I think Blythe is our best center but I won't be surprised if Gaul or Blythe is at guard the rest of the year with how well he played.

First drive. I think it was the third play when Walsh went down.

Maybe it was just Indiana's lame defense, but does anyone else think that the OL performed BETTER with Gaul at Center and Blythe at guard?

Like, maybe that combo needs to stick?

Hard to say, but the fact they moved Blythe over had me curious. Reminds me of when Brian Ferentz came back in 2004 and they stuck him at guard because he HAD to be out there, but timing may have been off (and Elgin did a fine job).

I wonder if this combo sticks, as well, or if it was just an Indiana-game thing...

This is a key observation. Almost every time that an Iowa QB has taken off and run this year is either because everything has been covered downfield, or it's Jake feeling phantom pressure. There were a few times in the Purdue game where they got some heat on CJ, but Purdue actually has a really good pass rush this year.

As to general strengths and weaknesses, our tackles are very good, and the guards have really struggled at times. Welsh has appeared to me to be the weakest link, but he is also the youngest and least experienced player. And Gamefilm pointed out in his Purdue write-up that Walsh has really had a rough season

For perspective, Michigan had a Top 10 NFL draft pick at LT last year, and their RT went in the 3rd round, and they were widely considered to have one of, if not THE worst, OLs in the league. I think they led the nation in TFLs allowed.

There's a lot more that goes into having a successful line than one or two good players.
