Which point guard gets a red shirt for the 2013-2014 season? (Or does one?)

So the Hawks have three in one class, which in my opinion is likely to change. Assuming Gessell is healthy, I would guess that Clemmons would be encouraged to red shirt. He clearly hit the wall about 2/3 of the way through this season, and Ingram would have had a very real shot to be ahead of AC on the depth chart for this season had he not spent the majority of his summer in Indiana on other commitments.

Might be the best for all three if AC red shirts, as I would guess R. Dev will play PG a good deal more next season than this season, allowing MG to slide to the shooting guard. Thoughts?
 




Clemmons has been in the rotation all year. Ingram has not been in the rotation all year. I'm not even sure Ingram was recruited as a point guard. I'm pretty certain Clemmons stays in the rotation next year. Ingram will likely red shirt (wasted season otherwise) and get in the class with Jok and Meyer. This balances the classes nicely.

Seniors - Basabe - McCabe - Marble
Juniors - Oglesby - White - Olaseni
Sophomores - Uthoff - Gessell - Woodbury - Clemmons
Freshmen - Meyer - Jok - Ingram (in this class after the red shirt year)

You forgot Clemmons.
 






There are a couple of things I really like about Iowa basketball moving forward. We will have experienced seniors next year and most likely the next several years. Despite losing 3 talented players next year I can look at the juniors, sophomores and freshmen and still see a very good team the next year...hoping/assuming this will be the norm from year to year.
 


I am pretty sure Ingram was recruited to play the 2 but I would not rule out Fran redshirting him next season. He seems to be the odd man out in the rotation right now and it will not get any easier with Jok, Uthoff, and Meyer playing next season.

It also gives Ingram a year in practice to play the 1 on the scout team, etc. and develop. IF Fran wanted to start Clemmons and Gesell together as juniors he now has a guy with 2 years in the program to come off the bench at the 1...am assuming Oglesby will back up the 2.

Ingram's role could then increase as a junior and he's now ready to run the show as a 5th year senior with 2 years of experience at the 1 when Clemmons and Gesell both leave. This is the kind of depth and forward thinking which prevents down years...a younger player now backs up Ingram and gets experience for the following year, etc.

I know some think Jok or someone else will end up at the 2 but I'm not in this camp. I think they will play together as starters when Marble's gone. I'm not worried about their height...bigger fan of the chemistry and 6th sense developed after playing together for 3 years. The Louisville guards aren't all that tall but they have that "it" factor and play almost as 1...also seem to be doing pretty well the last couple of years.

Very little red shirting is done these days. Project big guys are most likely to sit a season. If the pipeline is being restocked with better players, you want to keep the kids moving through the system. I am hoping Fran can do much better than Gabe (no hands) Olesini, for example, therefore, no red shirt please.

You want to free up scholarships as the program builds and attracts more talented players.

Gabe comment - Trolling or don't know basketball...there's no way we want to rush Gabe through the system.

I agree that it's unlikely for anybody to redshirt next year. Perhaps Ingram will just go through as a role player. Perhaps he'll emerge and take minutes from ??? Who knows? But I don't think you want him eating up a scholarship for another year because he's somehow going to get better by sitting out of games and just practicing.

This. He's got the highest ceiling of any player on the roster, and he's been making exponential strides towards that ceiling this year.

Different coaches have different philosophies on red shirts. I don't think Fran brings guys in that can't play and won't give up on a kid. We didn't see enough of Ingram to make a determination of his overall ability IMO. He could be special 3 years from now.

There were rumors about Gabe sitting next year which have been put to rest due to his improved play. Meyer sat this year. Fran looks to be a coach that will redshirt a player if it serves a purpose.

Just within the past month, in fact. I've been astounded by his on-court transformation. Something clicked for him and his game is blossoming.

Wikipedia - Self-confidence does not necessarily imply 'self-belief' or a belief in one's ability to succeed...When one does not dwell on negative consequences one can be more 'self-confident' because one is worrying far less about failure or the disapproval of others following potential failure. One is then more likely to focus on the actual situation which means that enjoyment and success in that situation is also more probable. Belief in one's abilities to perform an activity comes through successful experience and may add to, or consolidate, a general sense of self-confidence.

I think Gabe has himself a strong case of self-confidence...and its got a hold of the big man and isn't going away anytime soon.
