Which freshmen will see the field?

keep your chin up. You go out there, you put in the work, give the effort, you'll do big things.

I'm workin hard. The thread title is likely gonna change a few more times today.;)

Gotta believe AJ gets some work. I am hopeful for Brandon Smith and/or at least 1 or 2 of the top WR recruits to get some real time in the early games. Toren Young looked to have the chops, or at least the effort to see playing time. Other than that, not sure

Anyone with a pulse... No but really Brandon Smith is playing early and often. Probably another receiver or two take your picks. Probably a defensive back or two on special teams if nothing else and of course AJ is going to play. He may end up starting and playing a ton at some point during the year. Maybe not right out of the gate but it'd be a waste to have him healthy on the sideline holding his helmet when he could be in there terrorizing qbs on 3rd downs. Hesse is a solid player don't get me wrong but he's not a difference making pass rusher. Maybe he's gotten better this off season but he clearly hasn't gotten any bigger. He's going to stay at around 250ish. If your going to be at that size on the line you better be a step faster than whom ever is blocking you. AJ at 270 is that and then some already.

Epenesa is a lock to see plenty of time if he's healthy. I also imagine at least one of the freshmen WR's will play if for no other reason than out of necessity.

I think some of these guys might quit school if Gary Barta gets fired. Barry is very popular with the kids.

I can't see AJ not seeing the field, but ive seen stranger things.

Ya got me. The question is will this be another Keenan Davis thing where he gets token snaps?? Or a Matt Roth thing where they realize keeping him on the bench is a waste? How many years was Roth listed as a starter - anyone remember?

I agree that there is plenty of potential for more than 2 guys to see time on the field. What year was it KF burn't 11 red-shirts?

Young I believe is a red-shirt freshman.

I'm confused...are we recruiting blind athletes now. Has it gotten that bad? I hope they all can see the field for christ's sake. We need to hire a recruiting coordinator. Sometimes you take the low hanging fruit.

My bad. Only 3 of the incoming are legally blind. But they are a "good fit". And they have the same skills as Daredevil so I look for them to produce big time.

A.J Epenesa
Ihmir Smith-Marsette
Daviyon Nixon
Brandon Smith

I can understand the logic behind each choice. Nixon may be red-shirted to keep him on a path that is academically friendly.

Here's what ESPN says, give me your feedback.

Iowa: Youth could help bolster some of the strongest points of the Hawkeyes' depth chart and some of the weakest.

Blue-chip defensive end prospect A.J. Epenesa will likely be too talented to keep off the field for his 2017 season. Iowa's staff thinks the 6-foot-5, 270-pound second-generation Hawkeye could average between 15 and 20 plays a game to help add a solid layer of depth to a talented front seven.

Incoming freshmen might also make an impact at wide receiver and in the secondary, both spots where injuries and attrition have hit this offseason. The names to watch once they get on campus this summer include Djimon Colbert, Matt Hankins and Trey Creamer -- who could end up playing on either side of the ball depending on how he looks in training camp.

Lots of Fr. will get playing time this year:

AJ for sure will see the field
I think all 4 FR. WR will see the field (Cooper, Smith, Marshette, Marchese)
2 Fr. DB will see the field (Hankins, Creamer) Creamer maybe as a WR.
With the injury to Snyder, maybe Colbert sees the field too.
Last one is Bryan, if he is good enough, we need 4 RB through the season I would think.

I could see up to 9 kids hitting the field, with the low being 6 or 7.

This! Judging by last year and with some of the new coaches my guess is we see a record number of freshmen see the field early and then dwindle off as guys start to separate themselves more in practice and as guys get banged up. Kids need to see the field early to be able to make plays and develop their skills at game speed. Practice can only do so much as it is essentially a controlled environment. You need to see how these kids can handle themselves on the field.

They key is will any of them see the field after the first game? Unless it's a rare circumstance, we usually see FR play a bit in the first game, only to never see them again the rest of the year.

Feels like this year has to be different out of necessity
