RDM and Sapp did a fine job at PG vs Purdue. But I think we look much smoother with Gesell @ PG.
What is your prediction on his return?

I actually think Roy is solid at the point if he is shooting decent. I found his dribble drive to be quite effective also.. If only the Hawks weren't such poor shooters :(

Also, typical stress fractures take 4-8 weeks usually don't they? That is why he was wearing the boot right?

My prediction is Mike is done for the year. Stress reaction to the bones in the foot/ankle takes weeks to heal, and the athlete generally needs to keep off it, not run or do anything strenuous. Only after it heals can the athlete resume any sort of training. You can assume he'll be out at least four weeks, which takes him past any tournament competition.

Last I heard it was not a stress fracture but a stress reaction, which is sort of a precursor to a fracture if not treated. Treatment generally is partial immobilization of the foot and having the person stay off it as much as possible. Certainly no training or running for several weeks.

KMA reporting from last night Gesell will be out two weeks. As much as I'd like him to return for any tournament action, I hope the staff's bigger concern -- as I'm sure it will be -- is Mike's long-term health and readiness for next season:

Iowa's Gesell out two weeks | Sports | KMA Radio

(Iowa City) -- Iowa sophomore point guard Mike Gesell is out for two weeks with a “stress reaction” in his foot that had been building throughout the season, Iowa associate sports information director Matt Weitzel confirmed tonight.

Gesell, a freshman, averages 9.0 points per game and and is second in assists with 79. He averages 27.5 minutes per game. Freshman Anthony Clemmons is likely to start in Gesell’s place.

Gesell rolled his ankle on Saturday against Nebraska but this injury was to his other foot.

Playing Dev at the 1 seems to take the others out of the flow of the game. It allows teams to key on him as he has the ball more often. Think that playing Clemmons at the 1 and putting RDM back at his natural 2 would be the best way to go until Gessell gets back. The thing that scares me is him bad the offense looked last night when the starters went out. There just was nobody that was able to manufacture their own shot. The offense looked bad as a whole last night though.

It would have to be Nike. I love this commercial by the way. Get's me pumped up for Rose's return.

DR and I have the same knee surgeon.... That's where our sports commonality end!

On another important subject, why did Fran put MG on the guy who was shooting insanely after sitting out for a long time with such a bad injury?

Did MG go out because of the stress reaction or because he rolled the other ankle? I'm not remembering which one he injured in the game. He had the boot on his right foot last night?

The difference between a 'reaction' and 'fracture' is a matter of degree. Both suggest a disruption of the bone metabolism. Fracture can be seen on most imaging studies (X-ray, MRI, CT scan), whereas a stress reaction only shows up as increased bone activity on a bone scan.
Both injuries cause midfoot pain and swelling. Weight-bearing (walking, running) make it worse; resting makes it better. Both should be treated with six weeks of casting with nonweightbearing.

According to this, just in time to help hoist the NIT championship trophy.:D

It might depend on what they do with these last few games. If they lose to Illinois, I'd wager we don't see Gesell until the NIT. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's not back at all.

Fran gave off a totally new vibe last night when the conversation switched to what Mike did. He went full on Ferentz-mode and refused to give any details, and actually seemed to get more than a little irritated with people wanting to get a clear picture. We left the media room thinking he maybe feels he made a mistake playing Mike while this was lingering (he did say that this has been an ongoing issue and had nothing to do with the Nebraska game) and blames himself for Mike's status right now. Because the way he was acting was something none of the regular beat writers had seen from him before.

Did Gesell lose a year of eligibility for getting hurt? Or are they trying to be fortune tellers?

I played on what I thought was normal pain/soreness in my foot for a couple weeks my junior year of HS. When it didn't get better, I had it looked at...sure enough, it was a stress fracture. I got put in a cast (for 6 weeks, so I can attest to the above source) from the ball of my foot nearly to my knee. Then when the cast came off, the calf muscle had atrophied considerably (from lack of use) so it took a while to get back to normal. If they find a fracture, he's done for the year.
