When NIL Donations Don't Plan Out?

Tonight, Arkansas took down Kansas. The great Bill Self and his contingent of top recruits and NIL transfers beaten by another sleaze Jon Calapari and the Razorbacks. Over the course of the next three weeks there are going to be many disappointed boosters that put up a lot of money to get bragging rights, only to see their donation go unrewarded. Psychologically, how long does it take before it dawns on boosters that pouring money into NIL and booster clubs makes no sense? What are the expectations that go with the donations and how much pressure does that put on the coach?

It's out there that players are being offered 7 digit deals with a .00 behind the first 7 digits. A prime example was Dickinson that transferred to Kansas from Michigan. Kansas pours a lot of money into the program, even when it wasn't permitted. So Kansas is ranked number one, ends up a 7 seed and gets bounced by a 10 seed in round 1. Yeah, Kansas made the tourney, but how long can you afford to do it when you are in a conference that will not be getting as much media dollars? Boosters are going to be affected. While Iowa fans might be fretting about the low NIL money for basketball it might be for nothing. The NIL spigot will only last until the expectations aren't met by coaches and players.

I disagree. The people giving that kind of money are worth 9 or 10 digits. They're alumni die-hards to whom 3 or 4 million bucks ain't a big deal, and there's also the "I'm the biggest swingin d*ck in the room and you're not" factor. This is play money to those big donors, just look at the results of the big Texas schools...their results a lot of the time don't equal the investment but the money still keeps rolling in. The issue is Iowa doesn't have donors like that and I don't see one on the horizon.

You're right about those that have more than 8 digits to play with, but the ones with 7 digits might not be so inclined as much. Iowa's problem is more the size of its alumni and fan base. There are just fewer wealthy people to solicit or care at all. I don't think many of the Iowa fans understand the demographics related to competitive sports.

It's not sustainable without the revenue sharing. It will destroy the sport....but things will even out and settle. It's no use complaining about it, or not embracing it. Embrace it. Iowa needs to. They haven't. Now we're WAY behind. We can all not like it or piss and moan about it, but that's not really going to change anything.

Iowa football is also behind.
