Will having a stronger inside game be more important or will the outside game be more important? I am just curious what everyone thinks.

They compliment each other. If we have a stronger presents inside, especially on defense, we can control the tempo of the game better. If offensively we are a threat on the inside, the 2,3, and 4 positions should have an easier time getting quality shots with time on the clock. Traditionally, if you can't use the post to score you end up taking a shot with only seconds left on the shot clock and unless you are shooting lights out, your in trouble.

I feel like Mel and Woody will be the key this season. If we are able to actually defend inside it is going to lead to a lot more fastbreak pts. Also if they can play strong our second chance pts should be huge this year too.
If Gessell can knock down 3s and open jumpers it'll help a ton. We basically have gone the last year or two without an outside threat at PG (Cartwright), allowing defenses to sag and clog the lane. Having a PG that can knock down 3s will make the defense have to come up and respect that thus allowing hopefully more lane penetration or dump downs for the bigs.
Offensively, outside game rules in today's college bb landscape. You have to be able to shoot from the arc. Otherwise,they pack it in,and with all the best postup players going pro after a single year in college,there are few big men who can postup vs muliple defenders. This is why the Hawks got so much better when Matt got hot from the perimeter late last year. Devyn,Josh,Zach,Aaron and Gesell have got to shoot well from the arc to give our big men a chance to operate inside. In Zach and Aaron's case, the ability to hit from the arc opens up their drive to the hoop game.
With the way Fran wants to run, we can score in the paint off of transition,but you cannot scheme your way to making open shots from the arc..you just have to make them.

good points both ways. with the system we run, outside is probably more important, but not that much more. we obviously have seen what it looks like when you don't have a legit center and how that will kill you in the B10.
with the way games are called, a great PG can do much more damage than a great center, but i'd rather have both!

If guys can't make open jumpers then it will be a long season. Period. Gatens got on a roll late and that propelled us into the NIT, but once teams started keying on him it showed our lack of consistent outside shooters. I hope Ogelsby, Marble, Gesell and the rest of the wings are shooting 1,000 shots a day because our success depends on them.

This team (on paper) seems to have addressed its needs, but last year's freshmen need to show improvement with their shooting and this incoming class needs to be able to hit the ground running. To me though, what will be most important, will be how quickly this team gels. Guys will need to know and accept their rolls and Gesell and Clemmons will have to earn the respect of their teammates quickly since they'll be steering this ship to where we all hope it's going.
You have to start with being good both ways from the inside out. As said in the quote we need to be stronger inside to also better guard the perimeter by not having to sag in to help.
And the outside game is set up better going inside out to give your shooters more open looks.
I think the hawks are developing the center and strong forward positions with depth to give them an all around team.

The main reason I believe the bigs are so important this year is because in recent years teams were not forced to double inside. If they can do that we can create more open looks on the outside. With the young talent we have on the outside, open looks will be very important in the building of confidence with their shots. It is going to be very interesting this season. I still believe the 13-14 season we are going to see the true potential of what Hawkeye basketball will be going forward.

Cannot wait for this season...I haven't even wrapped my brain around what might be in another year...but holy crap, it sure is fun again.

I agree with this point of view. I was disturbed by our lack of interior D last season. Or maybe the lack of consistency of our interior D would be a better way to put it.

I have to keep reminding myself that we also have 6'10" Meyer coming in and we have Gabe with another year off working to get better. The size is there for interior D. Just need the effort. If we don't have any chair slamming moments this year that proves we have gotten tougher inside.

Even though Fran's style of ball is not a "power" game, I think we need physical presence inside. Whether it's a long shot-blocker like Woody or a banger more like Meyer...we need an inside presence.

It is a good feeling to be excited again about the program.....
I also think Fran addressed the basic needs. Perhaps the size in the middle is slightly more important because we were simply killed inside a lot of games. The outside game is almost equally important in my mind. We need three point accuracy and solid D. We also have guys coming in who can hit the mid-range jumper on the run. The incoming class compliments our returning team very well.....

No it doesnt make him for sure a great shot blocker but also I think teams may have just shot outside in high school in the fear of being blocked. I played against a few 7 footers in high school and we rarely went inside since we never had the height to compete in there
