Very excited to hear about the emergence of Nixon, but a little disappointed that Merriweather isn’t complexity grabbing hold of that safety spot. That could just be PP’s way of trying to motivate Merriweather to step up his play though.

Hey Rob,

I notice when discussing the LBs, Parker says Welch and Colbert are the starters right now, and mentions Doyle, Benson, and Campbell (that's new, right?). But there's no mention of Nick Niemann. Is falling out of the competition, just an mistaken omission, or is he going into that Barrington Wade spot where he is a starter at OLB, but that position isn't going to actually see the field all that much?

Things are just crowded because a traditional LB has been removed from the defense.

Niemann and Wade are working at all three linebacker spots, but their best position is LEO. I wouldn't count them out, but it sounds like they might be behind those other five as it relates to the MLB and WLB spots.

If this defense is going to be special, I think Nixon has to be part of that. Our really great defensive lines have typically had at least 3-4 NFL prospects. Having a big body like that eating up linemen and penetrating makes everyone's life easier.

I thank Rob for the interpretation. It's like a [Foreign Language] to English dictionary. Coachspeak to English. Rob has the complete dictionary of terms, idioms, analogies, metaphors, similes and obtuse references (one that KF is particularly adept at) that allow me to understand what is being said.

I don't know. My understanding is Merriweather didn't play football until his junior year in high school. He was a basketball guy. Than they burned the redshirt on him his freshman year. That's a long way to go in three years.

Sounds like Parker is hedging his bets. He's got two young talented guys that need to grow into the position, and a senior whose been in the system for five years.

Safety depth is probably more of a concern than I originally thought.

Back in the spring I was really hoping that OJ would make the move back to safety. I wonder if the coaches are going to regret that.

We have a lot of corner depth and honestly it’s going to be pretty unfortunate if Brents isn’t getting playing time this year.

I think they're trying to utilize OJ at CB and Cash. He's the safety next if DJJ stumbles at the latter. Then Brents slides in at CB. I could also see Brents jumping in if OJ struggles at CB.

KF has to have the feel good story at safety every year it seems. Typical reasoning is that he knows the defense better blah blah. Less athletic white kid, feel good story. KF loves that.

That's Phil Parker using motivation techniques with Merriweather. I'm willing to bet Merriweather is the starter in two weeks.
Oh no, KF has found the feel good story at safety again. Less athletic white kid that 'knows' the defense better. He will start for good no matter how many times he gets burned.

Well most of Iowa's "feel good white guy" safeties (Pagel, Considine, Greenwood, and others) have turned out to be pretty damn good players.

Last I check PP runs the D/secondary and runs it damn well for a long time. I’m good with whomever gets the call based on that white/black/Asian/Indian/mix/Arab/Ginger/Scottish(the shyte of the shyte, cannot even be conquered by decent wankers)bonus points for movie on the Scottish quote ya wankers

Why am I not surprised that this is your sourpuss take on this.

The last less.athletic, white kid.that knew the defense better is really damn close to making the Ram's 53 man roster... But hey, KF just want Jake as a feel good story.

I’d agree if he didn’t still have his redshirt available. Still has three more years even if he doesn’t play this season.

Lol.

2nd best defense in the Big Ten last year, and perennially in the top 4 or 5, and you’re bitching about who Phil Parker has on the field?
