What this team needs is more Basabe

At least when he is in the game, we should be going to him more often. Especially today after their 7'er fouled out. Basabe has been tearing it up lately. We should've taken advantage of that in the overtime period.

When Iowa tried to involve him in the game earlier, Marble and Gesell both made horrible passes at just awful angles, resulting in turnovers, from there he shouldn't have even bothered to post up.

Iowa makes some of the worst passes to guys trying to post, it is not that difficult to understand passing angles, but that would mean Iowa plays smart.

The mental part of Iowa is what is lacking, some of the things that they try and do makes it clear to me that some players just don't understand what their personal abilities are.

We really need him to miss more key free throws.

Geez. Almost every basketball game played, someone misses a big shot, makes a big turnover, or misses a late free throw. When the Hawks lose around here, it's like we throw out everything good they are doing. Basabe is a 71% FT shooter. Not bad for a big man. A 70% shooter only makes both throws half the time when shooting two. That's just math. These kids aren't machines.

A 70% shooter could make both more than half the time if he missed both other times. Irregardless, he missed a big one late. He did the same against OSU. So did White. Good players can't do that if you expect to win. They made them against Wisconsin and won.

Seventy percent (.7) squared is .49. Forty-nine percent of the time, over the long run, a seventy percent shooter will make both. That's just probability. Nine percent of the time, they'll miss both (.3 squared). Forty-two percent of the time, they'll make one.

Is that Basabe's exact distribution? Of course not. But those are the probabilities looking forward every time he steps to the line. Given that, why knock the kid for missing a free throw when he's playing as well as, or better than, any other Hawk.
