What Penn State should do.....

Now that the Freeh report is out and shows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the highest ranking members of Penn State University covered up for a serial pedophile in order to protect both their football team and university from scandal, these are the steps I think the university should make:

1. Remove the statue of Joe Paterno from the grounds of the University.

2. Remove the name of Joe Paterno from the university's library.

3. Write a check for $4 million, the total amount of money that Joe Paterno donated to the university during his lifetime, and give it to one or more child abuse centers in Pennsylvania.

Those would be good first steps to show that Penn State understands the gravity of the disgusting acts committed by it's highest leaders and show that no one person, no matter how powerful, is above protecting the well-being and innocence of defenseless children.

Beyond that, let the legal process and administrative process (both from the NCAA and B1G) play out.

I agree with both of the above posts, but let's not fool ourselves. What will actually happen is that psu and those named in the Freeh Report will double down with their legal teams and this will end up being an "out of court settlement".
And life will ooze ignorantly on in "happy valley", complete with proud declarations of "we are penn state!".

What's the over/under on the removal of that statue? I give it a week, tops.

Also, I do not envy Jim Delany right about now.

People will never learn that erecting statues, re-naming streets and other such honorary events should all be done posthumous. And not immediately afterwards.

Maybe Sandusky's victims should be empowered to decide the fate of the paterno statue?

I almost wish it would be done "Saddam Hussein style". Just have a bunch of students lasso some rope around it and pull that sumb!tch down.

The students should be marching their way to the statue to tear that **** down.

You'd think so, but over on the PSU boards, they're still trying to poke holes in this report. Some are saying in relationship to what Paterno knew is too general and not specific enough. They're questioning why McQueary wasn't interviewed and don't believe any sanctions will be handed down.

I think the first thing they should do is tell the Paterno family to shut the hell up. if i hear anymore of this " my daddy didn't do anything wrong " crap from Jay Paterno I am gonna puke .

Yep. Time for these guys to go build their own lives, because Daddy's coattails have been completely torn off.

If people took this same attitiude with folks like Bill Bonanno, John Jr. and Victoria Gotti, et. al., we wouldn't have reality shows, mobsters and their kids writing books, etc. God forbid the Paternos should be afforded the same courtesy.

What do you expect Jay and the other Paterno kids to say? Seriously?

Their father's name is being dragged across 20-grit sandpaper, some people still have doubts as to how much he could/should/did/didn't do, and to top it off, he's no longer alive to defend himself or speak out on the matter. Even the report has some wording that should raise eyebrows, such as, "it is most reasonable to conclude" and "we believe Mr. Paterno would have cooperated". And that crap about "we didn't leak it, we don't know how it got leaked"? Come on. "Reasonable to conclude" and "We believe" are fine words, but coupled with "we don't know how it got leaked" pretty much says Freeh and the gang weren't much better at this than the Warren Commission was after the JFK assassination.

It makes me question a lot of the know-it-alls and experts on this board, as well as those wanting complete decimation of PSU at max, or expulsion from the B1G at min. Given Iowa's history with sex abuse cases (and outright "rape"), wherein one offender was "punished" by redshirting, it's hard for me to read everyone mounting the high horse.

What happened at PSU is tragic. Paterno said as much. He's dead now. What PSU and their students, fans and admins want to do with his statue shouldn't be much concern to Iowa fans. That it seems to be pretty much confirms the overall slide of society toward whatever morass might come our way.

It's not our baby, it's PSUs. Let them and the B1G office and B1G admins handle that. And good Lord, let the Paternos deal with it however they need to deal with it.

I think people just want jay paterno (and the rest of the paterno family and apologists) to stfu now. Nobody cares if he publicly acknowledges his father's crimes. He just needs to shut up and go away.

hawkeyebob - The only thing I agree with you on is that the media today is quick to throw people under the bus. Aside from that, I think you wasted your time writing a long post that was pointless.

Actions speak louder than words, whether it's from JoePa or an investigator. The actions, or inactions I guess you would say, by JoePa and the administrators let a child molester run wild for over a decade. You can hand pick stupid comments out of the investigation all you want, but the fact Sandusky is just now in jail is an absolute tragedy. Failure by JoePa and PSU by epic proportions. Please don't stick up for them like the Staters are. It's sad and pathetic.

If they don't tear down that statue then it will be nothing more than a target for vandalism. They'll tear it down after it gets tampered with over and over again.

All good and ready-made arguments. But again, THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA ALLOWED PIERRE PIERCE TO REDSHIRT IN THE WAKE OF A RAPE ACCUSATION.

Help me out here, where's our moral high ground?

Super. When did Jay Paterno lose the right to free speech?

It's not really Jay, it's the media for giving him the Bully Pulpit. He has gone from having that due to his position of authority to the reality TV show wreck he is today.
