What needs to happen for Iowa to have a chance to win on Saturday

I don’t expect Iowa to win on Saturday, and I think a realistic prediction of the final score might be somewhere around 34-17 OSU.

In order for Iowa to stay competitive in this game I think the following things need to happen:

1. Win the turnover battle – if the Hawks manage to force a couple of turnovers and more importantly, take care of the ball themselves, they might have a shot at being in the game until the end.

2. Don’t get beat deep repeatedly – Lowery and King have both been picked on and burned numerous times already this year, and OSU has more speed and talent than any team we have faced so far, so I think the gameplan needs to revert back to Norm Parker ball where everything is kept in front of the DB’s. I realize that OSU will probably convert a few deep plays, but Iowa can’t afford to safety blitz at all in this game the Hawks may need to use the nickel packages more than they are used to in this game.

3. Convert 40% or better on 3rd down – Rudock has shown good poise thus far, and he has proven he can make a few plays with his feet, and I think he will need to convert at least 6 3rd downs to help sustain drives and keep OSU’s offense off the field.

4. Be willing to change the offensive gameplan from the start of the game – Don’t come out and run 2 off tackle runs to Weisman and then be faced with a 3rd and 9 on the first series of the game. The offense doesn’t have to have three straight 3 and outs before we decide to change the gameplan. OSU knows that Iowa prefers to be a power running, zone blocking offense. They also know that the receiver position is not a position of strength for the Hawks, so I think they stack the box with 8 and 9 guys on a frequent basis and invite Iowa to try to beat them through the air. To beat an aggressive run blitzing defense, Iowa must run some quick hit passes and some screens. I think this game is the perfect opportunity to use Canzeri on a few screen plays to try to negate the pressure that I think OSU will be bringing early and often on Rudock. In addition, use the middle of the field with Hamilton, CJ and KMM on some quick slants. If the running game with Weisman and Bullock is being stuffed, try using Daniels for a series or two.

5. Use Damond Powell on at least 10 offensive plays in the game – You can bet OSU knows that Powell is a speed burner, so by having him in the game for at least 10-15 offensive plays, at least he can occupy the safety’s attention and maybe at the very least open up some throwing lanes for some other receivers.

6. Special teams must play their cleanest game of the year – this means NO FAKE PUNT CONVERSIONS, no missed FG attempts, no shanked punts, no blown kickoff coverages (I believe that Meyer has a strong enough leg to kick it through the end zone on every kickoff) and no stupid penalties (Dead ball or Personal Fouls).

TL; DR

What needs to happen for Iowa to win is a massive crime spree that gets OSU's entire two deep suspended hours before kickoff. But of course, if that were to happen, Urban would sound like Johnny Cochran proclaiming the innocence of his players so really incarceration is our only hope.

We don't have the athletes to compete so it will need to be some freaky game where OSU fumbles 10 times and we get every single break.

Be more physical

control the clock

Get a few big plays over the top

be at least plus 2 in turnover margin

Get 2 or more scores on defense or special teams

Get pressure on the QB

Miss no tackles

Use the tight ends to keep drives alive

Have few to no turnovers

Avg 45 or higher on punt net

Miss no field goals

Miss no assignments on special teams or defense

Drop no passes

Run the ball hard and hold blocks

Do these well and win about 31-30

1. Turnovers from Ohio St, at least a +3 ratio for Iowa
2. Jake Rudock has the game of his life
3. Iowa WRs play out of their minds

a 54 yd field goal into a stiff breeze that bounces off the cross bar and miraculously drops on the other side......:D

There is only 10 mph wind forecasted, but a long fg might be needed. Maybe before halftime Iowa wil try to move the ball with time winding down to get into fg range. This is a game where every point they can get will probably be needed.

Covered it well. Agree with most of this. Agree that we simply cannot blitz this game...it is a gamble but cover the deep play and hope they mess up the easy short passes. We cannot give up anything easy, if possible. Also agree that Iowa cannot be predictable on offense. Throwing early is important. Iowa has nothing to lose, really, so why not gamble on offense more? Against Wisky, OSU loaded up on the run and Wisky passed successfully. I suspect the same will be true vs Iowa....they will want to stop our running game...we should pass until we loosen them up. If we are getting smashed, protect Jake by putting CJ in for the second half...he might be able to pass deep better with his stronger arm. On defense, Iowa needs to try to stop the run, and hope they get lucky vs the pass. Word out of OSU is that frosh rb, burner Wilson, is going to get a lot of play vs Iowa. They figure their big back might not run all that well vs Iowa's front seven , so Wilson is fast enough to beat us to the edge and turn the corner. Be ready for that!

I think that olddude had it right--Iowa needs a 12th man on the field at all time Saturday. If we got that, we got a chance!

to move the ball Iowa will have to pass when they traditionally run and run when they traditionally pass. The good news here is that Iowa has established strong tendencies (we are who we are (duh) ).

This might be the type of game where the hawks have to play a man-zone combo scheme where lowery and king are told to play man and basically only your man, dont peek in the backfield and let the other 9 guys play the run. And the linebackers and safeties play a 5 player zone in the middle. If lowery and king are looking in the backfield for miller or the run game then look out.

It needs to be a game like ISU beating Nebby a few years ago where Nebby self-destructed with 8 turnovers, several of them by just dropping the ball. Nebby had 3 times the yards but 6 times the TOs.

For Iowa to keep this close (as others have mentioned), they need to come out right away as if they are down 3 scores going into the 4th quarter. Even then I don't think they have even a miniscule chance of winning.

Iowa will get blown out if they try to dictate the flow of this game. OSU is too powerful. If they play with urgency right from the beginning then they might be able to keep it respectable.

So you are saying we need a six sigma event to win this game.

This is a top game. Time of possession and nothing over the top. Get in millers head with a pick or two, knock the ball loose. Time of possession and being a ball hawk is how we win. Oh and for heavens sake some good special teams play would be nice. Remember boys when running a move, keep you eyes on the db's hips, when they start to rotate, then you make your double move.

Wisky did almost everything correct in stats. One turn over to none and they went head to head in time. Those were the two stats they were behind on.
