What might have been....

If Iowa had only managed to beat a weak Nebraska team IN Iowa City, the Hawkeyes, right now, would be all alone in 6th place in the Big Ten with a 6-6 record. That's how close Fran is with the worst defensive basketball team I've seen at Iowa in the last 50 years. And that includes the Dick Schultz era, of course.

How a group of young men on D-1 scholarships can repeatedly stand around and watch as opponents drive and dish and slam is beyond me. I maintain this is the softest group of players I've seen at Iowa. There are a couple of individual exceptions, sure, but as a team...wow...

This basketball team plays defense like the football team did at Minnesota in 2010, the "effort" that Adrian Clayborn described as resulting from a general "loss of the will to win."

So the challenge for Fran is to figure out how to instill a killer instinct into a basketball team whose personality is about as vicious as that of Paris Hilton's puppy. It begins, of course, with getting into a defensive stance and moving your feet, refusing to let your man go, no matter what. Haven't seen much of that. A little communication wouldn't hurt, either.

In fact, I remember a few practices back in the day when the basketball was banished. It was all defense, all physical, all foot speed and quickness drills.

And as an aside, is it me, or has Devyn Marble disappeared since he was moved out of the PG spot? That seemed an odd move at the time, and it isn't appearing any better now. So maybe move Devyn back to the PG for the rest of the year and give somebody else an opportunity. The current PG simply isn't getting it done in any area of the game.

It seems clear that Iowa can't outscore anybody, so if the Hawkeyes expect to win some more games this year, it would seem it's time to start playing defense every second for 40 minutes. But don't believe me. Ask Tom Izzo and Thad Motta.

So we haven't outscored anybody this year? I'm confused..

Seriously though, at times our team defense has looked pretty good, and at other times, just plain pathetic. I think that will be an area of focus for Fran in the off-season, and already is I'm sure and I think that he'll get it fixed.

Its crazy to play the "what if" game. This team could just as easily be in the cellar of the Big 10 as it could to being 6-6. Wisconsin and Minnesota are two games we probably should have lost. These "should wins" and "should losses" tend to balance themselves out over the course of the year. We are what we are.

I definitely want more of Marble at the point. Cartwright hasn't been getting it done, and has shown only intermittent flashes of his old self. Marble has been less effective off the ball, as well. I like the game being put into his hands much more than Cartwright's right now. Bryce is just playing too out of control.

Gosh, what if this team had lost to Wisky, Michigan, and both games to Minnesota...

Gosh, what if this team had won four more games than they have now....

What if this team played the best defense in the NCAA, or the worst? Or the best offense, or the worst?

Has there been disappointing times this year...yep, but most of us knew that going into the year that this team probably would struggle; some thought with a little (no a lot) of luck they would have a very nice year and be the surprise of the B1G.

Personally I think Iowa still is the surprise of the B1G....no they are not going to the NCAA but Iowa is no longer the doormat of the league like they were just a couple of years ago and a total joke to play. Regardless of the team Iowa plays, that team has to take Iowa seriously or they will get beat. And even then Iowa is beating some of these teams. Yep, they still have terrible games, but now we have just as many good games as terrible games. Next year there will be more good games than terrible games.

THAT is a huge step up from the depths of the Lickliter era...

Coach Cafe's teams at his former job played excellent defense. He needs time to get his players in place. He is getting there. PATIENCE!!!!!!!!

+1

The OP caught a good one about Marble since playing time at the PG has dwindled. That's my perception, too. But it could be just a perception.

I agree that I would like to see Marble back at pg. It also seemed to me that Gatens got a lot more good looks when Marble was at the point.

What might have been? We would be basically in the exact same position we are now...a win at home against a crappy team wouldnt have much impact
