What is the role of a fan?

The role of a fan to tear down a team? You'll have to explain that to me. Some of the stuff I am seeing on here tonight is some all time 'if you live long enough you'll read everything' stuff

Our role is to do exactly what we are doing, because in the end what we do isn't supposed to matter to the team. Kirk and the senior leadership handle the teams emotions, and most everything we do or say is independent of that.

Your incredulity is the very reason why I posted it. Just notice how many of the "imploders" here are tearing down their beloved team more than propping it up.

What is the role of a team (players/coaches)?

To come to a game well prepared. Execute that game plan. Leave everything out on the field.

Our failure as a fan is a direct reflection of our player/coaches and their performance today.

Sometimes the holier than thou posters are just as annoying as the "fire the whole coaching staff" posters.

Fans invest. They invest with their time, their money, their "heart". That kind of investment means that when the "return" on that investment isn't bearing out, you are going to get some ticked off people. It's human nature. Frankly, as long as there aren't F bombs being thrown around in here and you aren't calling for the entire staff to be fired tomorrow, I don't see much of an issue with people venting their frustrations.

Our only role as fans is to enjoy ourselves. Watch the games, cultivate your relationship with the team and the university, yell loud on third down, and spend time with your family or your buddies that only get together to watch the Hawks. That's what most of us grew up doing, not just when we went to the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl and won Big Ten Titles, but when Randy Reiners was running the show. I grew up watching BJ Armstrong, but damn if I didn't watch last year's basketball team too.

So if you enjoy theorizing about ways the team could improve on a message board, you should do that too-- same goes for pointing out positives or defending various players on the team or the coaching staff.

But don't think that anything that happens on this board matters, because it doesn't. The only real-world impact of message boards is that occasionally lazy sports reporters will read them and use them to phrase press conference questions, as in "Some have questioned your defensive scheme against spread offenses, etc., etc.".

Ultimately, if you don't enjoy watching the team, even on days like today, then you shouldn't feel compelled to keep being a fan, because it doesn't really matter. As Norm of Cheers fame would say, it doesn't change the price of beer, so who cares?

Somebody here gets it. If I wanted sunshine and good feelings I would go upstairs and hang out with my wife. I'm on the message boards to vent, and to hear other fans venting. It's a part of the coping process, and it happens almost every time we lose. If you don't want to be a part of it, don't travel to the message boards after a loss until midweek.

I think the reactions of today let people know just how much this team is LOVED. Apathy is the only other choice or if you are happy about your teams losing effort today well, that is a whole nother problem in itself. If people didn't get on here and get critical after poor performances they should cheer for ISU cuz they would be happy with a close loss.

This is another great point. If I didn't give a **** about the team, I wouldn't be upset about losing today. People being upset means we care about the team and it's success.

Sports fans' relationship with their team is no different than the relationship family members have. I was the oldest of 4 boys in my family. We fought with each other like cats and dogs. But if someone from outside the family said one thing against them or anyone else in the family, they were going to get smacked in the mouth.

It's the same here. We are upset and disappointed and angry because we care. Sure, we sometimes say something bad about our "brothers" in the black and gold, but come Saturday, we're cheering our lungs out and God help the poor soul that rags on our team......he/she usually ends up getting smacked in the mouth.

I never understand why some people get so worked up over criticism. It could be worse. It could be like basketball under Lickliter where no one criticized anymore because no one cared.

+1

To cheer, to moan, to congratulate, to praise, to admire, to appreciate, to watch, to cringe, to feel, to share, to applaud, to encourage, etc....you get the picture...but sometimes it is to commiserate, to vent, and to b*tch! That is what forums are for.

To prop up your team?

... or to tear it down?

Any thoughts?

You can't expect that fans that get themselves so emotionally invested in their team as to spend large amounts of time and sums of money to see them, are the type of people to be satisfied with bad losses and what appear to be systemic problems. Do you?

We will be there to support the team next week. Don't worry about that.
