What is the opinion of Chuck Long as next head coach?

I didnt follow his San Diego State venture that closely. I know his record wasnt all that good but did he bring in some good players that Hoke used to have a couple great seasons? Was he bad on game day decision making? Did he lose his players?

Long seemed to be competent enough as an Offensive coach and coordinator.

Please post real good inside info or reputable info about Long's head coaching ability.

Chuck Long was a disaster at SDSU, Brady Hoke was moderately successful at the same place. So the guy who was more successful than Chuck Long at the same job, just got fired and is universally acknowledged as incompetent. He can't even go 7-5 at Michigan, and Chuck Long did much worse than he did at SDSU? Did you just see how much Nebraska had to slum it with their hire?

He had success at Oklahoma as QB coach and then as their OC/passing game coordinator. I wouldn't mind him taking those spots at Iowa but not HC.

How was he specifically a disaster at SDSU? He left some good players for Hoke and Hoke was better than avg there.

He went 9 and 27 at SDSU, how is that not a disaster. He was fired after going 2 and 10 in his third season. His success at Oklahoma was with tons of talent and other talented offensive coaches. He was coaching in High School just two years ago.

Chuck Long would be a good fit for OC. We need someone on the staff that knows the QB position.

I can think of one criteria where he almost matches a head coach in the state of Iowa, he lost two games to fcs opponents in three years.

Long had a reputation for being lazy when he was an assistant at Iowa. After SDSU, He was the OC for Kansas under Turner Gill before Gill was canned.

I would not mind seeing him come back to Iowa as an assistant. Maybe as OC.

Where'd you hear that? I've certainly never heard anyone say that before. I agree why he wasn't hired to replace KOK was beyond me and why he won't be next year if Davis is still there or replaced with someone else will be too. He knows football. He did really well at Oklahoma. Maybe he's not head coach material and maybe he never will be. But he knows offense and I think he'd work way more wonders with the QBs we have then Davis obviously is...

He is better on television and radio than at actually coaching. He can talk a good game but the results on the field just aren't there. We could hire Matt Millen and get the same deal.

NO!

That was easy. Next candidate please.

Unfortunately, your comment is correct. He is better on TV and Radio than coaching. Now, I'm one who thinks he's marginal as a TV analyst at best. So if you are following me here...I'm saying he's a less than marginal head coach.

The SDSU fiasco wasn't his fault entirely. That program had big problems...losing Scholarships due to academics and a previous regime that ran it very very poorly. He took over a bag of crap. That being said, the local SD media ate him alive. The pressers were brutal...and I'm serious...absolutely brutal. This isn't Iowa City where everyone is lining up to kiss the ring of the head coach out of fear of never getting another credential. This is a big market and they come at you when you screw up. KF wouldn't last in that environment.

Long was so bad in some of those press conferences that the media turned on him a bit...mostly one or two sportswriters...but he was to blame for that. The reality is that he set the program up for success...I really believe that...he did a lot of things right, strength and conditioning, academic counseling, recruiting...etc...all which Hoke benefitted from. But he reminds me of KF in the game day coaching.

It seems like you are arguing with yourself.

I think Long has a good thing going as a TV analyst and he knows it.

He is perfect for the BTN because he can bring so many different perspectives.

A legendary college all-american heisman runner-up QB at Iowa.

A starting QB in the NFL, ultimately a failure, but still enough pro experience, he can still talk about it.

An assistant coach in both the Big Ten and Big 12, includimg being the OC for team that went the national championship game while at Oklahoma.

Then a head coach too, which also was a failure.

As an analyst, what more could you ask for in experience?

Love and appreciate what Long did for the Hawks. I think he was a decent QB, not great. Before you jump on me with "closest voting in Heisman history" rationale, think about the line he was operating behind and the talented RBs and receivers who made him look much better than I think he was. He threw a wobbly duck of a ball but that made it easier for receivers to catch.

That said, he does not strike me as head coach material, at least at the college level.

Chuck was actually asked about this in a recent interview. He said even if the job was offered to him he's not sure he'd want it because he's pretty much liked now across the board but it wouldn't be long if he were head coach that he wouldn't be so well liked. .. lol. How's that for some perspective.

Loved watching Long play...he was a very good qb in college (good line or not, he carried his weight and then some, having a lot of intangibles as well...and deserved to win the Heisman that year) and he may have been better than his results in the NFL, but was on a VERY ineptly run Detroit team.

I also enjoy him as an analyst, especially on our games. I wouln't want to lose those positive perspectives I have of him, and believe it would be quite possible if he were to be our head coach (based on his previous coaching resume). An assistant for the "right" HC, maybe, but let's just keep his legacy intact and not consider him for HC.
