What is the definition of a true fan?

I see and visit with hundreds of true fans everyday at the store, home, away, and bowl football games. They are young - old, male-female, rich-poor, support all Hawkeye sports, and do not get down on the teams. They show concern when things do not always go right, but they support the team and coaches to the end. Whether they watch at the games or from home, they know what is going on and appreciate the effort the young athletes put forth. When I meet them out in public, we can be the only two Hawkeyes among 1000 people and I always get a proud "GO HAWKS".
Love or hate me, I work everyday to be a ture Hawkeye fan, and I am proud of it.

This would come the closest to what I think, but can you be a 'true fan' if you have never seen your team play in person.

If you are a fan of college football you need to be in the state of the team you are a fan of, have family that went to that school, have gone to the school yourself, have seen the school play with regularity, or have some other affiliation, religion, military service. You also have to stick with that team no matter what.

Calling yourself a fan of a college football team because they win is not being a true fan, there is another word for that.

You can be a fan of a pro-team just be saying you are a fan and wearing the colors. I change my pro-team affiliation every year based on a pool I participate in which is not individual player based, but team based. Pro sports is a business, there is no loyalty there. Not that there are not loyal Steelers, Browns, etc. fans. But when you favorite player and the heart of your team gets traded, because it is business, or when your team packs up and moves to a different city, it is hard to really hold any particular fan down as being disloyal.

Now, I say this because I have sworn off being a fan of the only team to which I have held season tickets until the owner dies, but that is another deal altogether.

So then there are hardly any true fans, since I've never seen anyone get totally depressed after an Iowa loss other than a close loss in an important game

Really? You should see my family! My dad, brother, sister and I all take it too personally when the Hawks lose. Maybe depressed isn't the right word...unless you include some anger in that as well. My husband has learned to say "sorry for your loss" and then not engage me in conversation for a few hours. This way he doesn't take the chance of getting his head bit off for saying anything that I would take the opposite view with...."Honey, I think we should have chicken tonight instead of hamburger...." ME:".....grrrrrrrrrrrr....what!!"

I imagine that's why many of us drink alcohol before the game as it helps with the celebration....or numbs the loss...just in case!

If a team's loss effects you for more than, say, 3 hours, you are not a true fan, you need more hobbies.

I find it is easier to stay awesome when you do not get too emotionally invested in things you have no control over.

I'll agree that I need more hobbies than checking this board multiple times per day, watching Hawk game reruns, and shopping only for Black and Gold clothing items...Time to open the last three months of mail and maybe do a little spring cleaning....or maybe take down the Christmas tree before Easter.

And obviously, you are a true fan since you are questioning my fanhood....;)

It really bugs me when people have this mentality that only the people who provide money to the school or program are the true fans, that because you donate makes you somehow better. My family has donated and had season tickets for around 35 years now. Does that make us better hawkeye fans? Hell no! We are just lucky and able to do so. Everyone who pays taxes in the state of Iowa "donates" to the school and program. God this bugs me. A "True Fan" is someone who LOVES his/her team, period, end of story!

Such as posting on message boards? :)

I don't have an emotional investment to this message board. I am as attached to the guys here the same way I ram attached to the guys who bag my groceries at Hy-Vee. Convienient, of course, since most of the guys here ARE the guys who bag groceries at Hy-Vee.

I will never donate anything to the University until they chop down those trees on the Pentacrest. I don't know what they are called, but they are colloquially known as "Sh**berry trees". You know what I'm talking about.

I bag at Fareway jerk! :D

A true fan bleeds black and gold.....now go to your bathroom and cut yourself....see you're not a true fan yet, you must try harder!!! Maybe next year?

Do you have an emotional involvement in the outcome of the team/school? This goes beyond how many $$$ you spend or number of games you attend. If you get a prologed 'high' from a big win you're a fan. If you get a knot in your stomach from a tough loss you're a fan. Outside of personal achivements/losses some of my most vivid memories of my life that bring a smile to my face or bring back that dreaded know are Hawkeye wins or losses.

One who travels over 30 hours to go to the Orange Bowl despite being pregnant and incredibly nauseous the entire trip....does that win anything?
