What is the definition of a true fan?

I am trying to define a true fan to a misguided nephew who is a Gator fan what a true fan is and a week in Florida has completely numbed by mind. So help me out.
What is your definition of a true fan?

Well, I get called out for not being a true fan all of the time, so my definition would be someone who claims they are a bigger fan than you. The only time you can be a true fan is when you are questioning the "Fanhood" of another guy.

A "true" fan is one who follows and supports their team....no matter what. Thru thick and thin....thru wins and losses.

That does NOT mean you have to always be upbeat and positive. You can still criticize, be upset with the players/coaches, and even *GASP* predict the team will lose.

This would come the closest to what I think, but can you be a 'true fan' if you have never seen your team play in person.

Heck yeah you can be a true fan without ever seeing your team!!!!!! No everyone can aford to go to a game (I am very lucky thats not the case for me). Sometimes the fans that cant go to a game are actually MORE of a "True fan" IMO.

Lots of feelings on this.

A true fan ...

Supports their team/school win or lose, no matter what the record.

If they live too far away to go every week, makes a pilgrammage each chance possible - game day or not.

Tells his fiance "I love you. But when (team/school) is playing, I'll be in front of the tv or the computer to follow the game. I need you to understand that before we get married."

No matter how bad things get for the team, a true fan holds out faith for next year. (Any true Cubs fan knows this).

Makes sure in every fantasy league, there is a representative of his favorite team on his squad. (For me, that means trying to get a Chief, and that's tough. Taking Keading, Clark and making a play for S.G. are easy)

Wears team gear after a loss, and doesn't give a crap what people have to say about it.

Develops a true hatred for a rival based on past sins, even if they did not occur in the fan's lifetime.

This is pretty good, and I would add: Supports the team/school financially to the extent he/she is able.

(However just because you do give $$$ doesn't necessarily mean you are a "true" fan.)

Thanks Hooper ... nice addition. Would that include purchasing team gear from the official source, rather than Wally World????

It always kills me that when Iowa is in a big game, the local news station sends a cub reporter out to get "fan" reaction. They normally end up in a bar somewhere and talk to drunk people watching the game. And I bet none of the people they interview are even members of the I club.

I think the definition is pretty simple:

Total elation when your team wins.

Complete dejection when your team loses.

That is a true fan.

So then there are hardly any true fans, since I've never seen anyone get totally depressed after an Iowa loss other than a close loss in an important game

In case any of you haven't seen this on SportsNation on ESPN. It's a terrible show...but this video is awesome.
