What is keeping Woody and Gabe from finishing? your honest opinion

Is Woody dropping his head and eyes on these close shots expecting contact?

Woody and Gabe work really hard, get position and rebounds, but they missed 12+ points in put backs or close shots.

Gabe seems to not be exploding to the rim and going up soft.

Is this an attitude type thing or a physical thing not being strong with the ball.

They tense up for some reason. It's been happening more the past month. Let's face it, both are struggling on both ends of the court, and they need to play a lot better if Iowa wants to have a decent tourney run.

^^ You could be right. They really seem to be rushing the shots , not gathering themselves for a power move. Maybe that is being tense or trying too hard.

Woody is physically weak, he also lacks any explosion and elevation to finish thru or over contact. Basically he isnt strong enough and cant jump.
While Gabe can elevate and has athleticism he does not have much touch with the ball and really isnt very physical either. More of a long running gliding player.

Sadly, with their body build types, they can't add much muscle. They just don't have the frame and the joints to support it. They will play the same next year, combine for 12 to 13 points and 6-7 boards a game, but I hope they mature enough to finish 98 percent of their 2 foot shots instead of 88% of them.

Ive defended Woodbury all year but man Im sick of watching him miss layups and not even get fouled. He throws the ball up quick with his arms instead of powering up with his whole body twoards the rim. Obviously it doesn't help that he has short arms with a narrow body, is relatively weak and can't jump. Still he should be able to finish those from two inches away.

Gabe, really pisses me off, he has no excuse, he can jump and has a big wing span, yet for some reason he tries to put up shots with out even jumping.

They have the same virus going around the team.....scared to make mistakes. Woody does not have the physical build to dominate in the Big Ten (height, but not enough bulk). Still a bit green in the cognitive court skills needed to compete in a major conference......but better than Gabe here. I think he could use the services of a Big Man's camp and needs to put more weight on. His senior year will probably be his best year. He is a little better than a role player over all right now.

With Gabe he is a finesse player who will dominate against weak teams and give you a good thing, two, or three against good competition from time to time. Has poor cognitive court skills. He is a role player.

I think Mr. Davis would have these guys playing at a high level in their senior years though. Hopefully, Fran will develop his bigs.

Mr. Davis knew how to feed the post with bigs who had a big base, wrap around bounce passes, and easy layups

Mr. Davis could flat out coach. No way this team would look nearly as ridiculous with him teaching them.

Davis was however not a tireless recruiter which Fran is.

Correct, in a word the answer is "talent".

It's not just those two. It was everybody who got the ball inside last night vs msu. they caught the ball, then instead of gathering themselves and powering to the hoop, they looked around to see where the defender was.
White in particular caught the ball underneath on an inbounds play. He immediately looked at his defender who was stumbling backwards, then ball faked for no apparent reason. His defender then had time to recover. Now to be honest, I was so miffed at our complete lack of testes that I don't remember if he made the shot or not. But it was a pathetic example of just how weak this team is.

Woodbury is a work in progress who will be an upper tier post the next two years. His lack of strength is holding him back. Other poor jumpers have been decent post players and scorers, but he hasn't developed these skills yet. Thus he has ups & downs in his performance.

Olaseni isn't physical enough to produce vs. physical teams. He negates his athleticism by playing mostly with straight legs. He has some of the worst hands in the Big 10.

Both players struggle when they have to guard players on the perimeter. But if they move their feet, they can be tough to shoot over inside. The old saying that you can't teach height is true.
