What is everyones stance on this?

In my mind, Mallett and even Gabbert are better options than all of the above for the future other than maybe Schaub.

I think this is going to be a good year for QB's. Maybe not 1983 good, but good.

I would agree with your thought but there is no way Denver would draft a QB after dishing out 1st round money to Tebow last year. I think the Browns are pretty happy with what they have seen in McCoy to stand pat as well.

Carolina may not take Luck, but he will be gone by #12. I dont think Gabbert is worth the 12th pick and if Mallett is off the board I think the Vikings have to look elsewhere for the 12th pick. Here are the teams the pick ahead of the Vikings:

1- Carolina- Have Jimmy Clausen, also have needs all over.

2- Broncos- Drafted Tebow in 1st round last year. Will not take QB

3- Bills- Depends on if they think Fitzpatrick is long term answer

4- Bengals- Could cut Palmer, have lots of needs

5- Cardinals- Need a QB

6- Browns- Have Colt McCoy

7-49ers- Desperately need a QB

8- Titans- Kerry Collins and Vince Young are not the answer

9- Cowboys- No QB need

10- Redskins- McNabb is probably gone, Grossman the back up.

11- Texans- terrible defense and have Matt Schaub

The Panthers want Andrew Luck so bad it hurts. Trust me on this - I read about it every day in my (Charlotte Observer) sports section.
Clausen was an epic fail this season; there were a lot of reasons why he 'fell' to the the 2nd round, and all of them were exposed this season. 1-9 record, lowest QB rating in the League (58.4) and a 1:3 TD to INT ratio. He's slow, indecisive, not strong armed, and on the short side. He sucks.
If Luck comes out, Carolina takes him, end of story.

They need to shut the Panthers franchise down if Luck declares and they don't select him or get a Ricky Williams-like return to move down a few spots and still take a QB. Jimmy Clausen doesn't think Jimmy Clausen is a good NFL quarterback.

Makes sense. Then my guess is Mallett will go #5 to Arizona and that leaves Newton, Gabbert, or Locker on the board for QB's at the 12 spot for the Vikings. If that is the case I say no thanks to a QB and look OL.

Sign either McNabb or another veteran that could be out there like Palmer or possibly Orton and try again for a QB next year. Let the veteran play for 2 years then hand over the team to the young guy.

I like OK4P's idea. Another one would be to invert 1 - 20 (all non-playoff teams), so the best teams to not make the playoffs would get the best picks. This would eliminate the desire to lose late as a non-playoff team since even though a team would be eliminated from the playoffs they would be trying to win in order to get a better pick in the next year's draft.

Here's my stance, I hate the way the NFL draft is set up to reward failure. I think the team that wins the super bowl should get the top pick and the super bowl loser the second pick and so on. But since that will never happen, I think they should use a lottery system for all 32 teams, at least in the first round. You could still pick the same way you do now rounds 2-7, with the worst team having the first pick. But this would reward teams for being successful, and give the top college players a chance to be on a good team right away.
I love the idea of a draft lottery for 1-32 in the first round. What would make it even more fun is if the lottery was held on draft night. Reach into the fish bowl, and let's see who gets the 1st pick. They get 5 minutes to pick someone. I would take that over the months of speculation on which team picks which player. (I want this for basketball as well).

Or, the other idea I like is whoever gets first pick gets to choose when they select in the 1st round. So many teams do not want to pick in the top of the draft due to economics (as OK4P mentioned) that teams could choose where they are slotted (at least in round 1).

The new labor agreement may change how draft picks are paid as well, so the dollars at the top of the draft may be changing as well.

ummmm what?

Point being that if the Vikings draft Gabbert (or whomever) and then run him out there without addressing his protection issues first, he's going to take a pounding. Maybe not to the level of David Carr or Matt Stafford, but a pounding nonetheless. Webb didn't look bad when he played, and he's got the mobility to make things happen with his feet.

Granted, I don't know if Webb is the answer for them, but a new QB isn't going to make things all better in Minnesota.

Webb is not the answer. You said QB is the least of their worries, which is not the case. That would go along way in making things all better in MN.

Not in favor of them starting the guy they draft this year.

Gotta draft A QB, pick up a free agent (most likely McNabb) and let him learn. QB is the vikings #1 need.

Look, I really don't care what the Vikings do in the draft. They're facing a long re-building process, and are looking at finishing no better than 3rd in the division for the next few years.

Could be true, but the NFL is the one league where you can have a major turnaround in one year. Good or bad turn around.

I just hope the new CBA keeps a salary cap and the parity stays in the NFL.

Whether you care or not is irrelevant. You said QB was the least of the Vikings concerns right now. That just isn't the case.

I also said a new QB isn't going to make things all better in Minnesota. Would you agree or disagree with that?

Best case scenario for the Vikes is to draft a QB that does not have to start the next couple years and let him develop behind a McNabb type for 2-3 years. Hopefully they can find a QB in Round 2 because I think they should use the 12th pick on the OL and they do not have a 3rd round pick because of the Randy Moss trade. (That worked great).

Re-sign Sidney Rice and Greenway and use the money from the expiring contracts or Ray Edwards, Bretty Favre, Pat Williams etc. to find some players to fill holes in the secondary and d-line.

So a new QB in Minnesota would help things immensely. If they can get a veteran QB to play there for 2 years they have enough talent to challenge for playoff contention right away next year again.

O Lineman is extremely weak this year, im not sure there is a single lineman worthy of the 12th pick and this may be one of the best QB classes in recent memory.

Secondary just needs to get healthy and a year of experience will help the young guys.

Offensive and Defensive Line are both needs but i think they can be addressed later in the draft. This is of course assuming Mallett falls to 12.

I saw last night during the bowl that McShay had Mallett as the 31st overall player and like 4th or 5th QB. That blew my mind.
