what in the hell was that?

Pathetic effort from the start. They give that kind of effort and they won't win any Big 10 games. Where is the leadership from Gatens, Cole, and May? Gatens with 2 shot attempts in the first half? This is just a complete 180 from the Illinois/OSU games. I don't get it. You have to bring it every minute of every game if you are this team to have a chance. Disappointing.

That was almost as bad as I have seen Iowa. Similar to our blow out losses to end the Lick Era. It is one thing to get beat by Purdue on their home court, it is quite another when you look inept in your losing effort. Purdue is talented, but we made a lot of "last 3 years type of errors" on the court today. It looked like a regressed effort. Surprisingly considering we have played some good teams as of late, we looked scared and timid out there. Maybe it was because it was the first Big Ten away game for this team? I don't know, but they did not reflect the type of play that we have seen this team building on. Hopefully it was just one of those games and the guys will pick it back up.

Agreed. It was the first game that I've watched this year that made my eyes bleed. Not really sure what to think of it but I hope these guys have short memories because not much can be learned from this game and they should simply erase it from their memories.

Next.

On the road against a top ten team? About what I expected. This team won't compete on the road this year against good teams.

That's a cop out. I don't expect them to win these games, but I do expect them to compete. They've got enough players on this team to stay in these games. Remember this game, don't repeat it, and move on.

I agree. I can take a 20+ point loss on the road if I felt like the effort was there. Don't know if it was the early start on the road or what but it clearly wasn't. They proved the last couple of games they can do it. Yes it is more difficult to win on the road(see MSU) but we are talking about competing here. Today is not what I expected at all.

Coming into the year, I expected a game or two like this on the road in the Big Ten where we just get completely waxed, where it looks like we regressed, and it was just plain ugly. So I'm hoping that this is just one of those games and that we'll do better the next time we play a good team on the road.

I'm trying not to overreact to it, but yeah, I was just as disappointed in today's effort as any of you. As pointed out already, today was far too much like the past few years for my comfort.

Eddy. I understand your frustration. I also know that we would see games like this. They will be few and far between. Unlike the Lick ERA when it was every game.. Iowa still young. This league is going to be brutal for this Hawk team...

I here ya, they are young no doubt about it and maybe this will serve as a wake up call in the effort department as I'm pretty sure none of them enjoyed that beat down today.

I like how people blame every bad game on effort. Not the fact that we are bad team. When kids are overwhelmed, by talent, atmosphere, ect... they play more passively, and generally play bad. That's what happened today. Our players were overmatched by PU's athletic perimeter defense. Playing on the road only made things worse. This wasn't an "effort" issue. This was the one of the worst teams in the Big 10 playing one of the best teams in the Big 10, on the road issue. The kids were playing hard, trying to compete and were obviously getting frustrated.

Seriously this team is not good. Why are you upset that we got beat down by a great Purdue team? Lick drove this program into the ground and left Fran with nothing. The only good thing to come from this fran team was Marble and Gatens, and with them being legacy recruits, hell i could have recruited them.

Sorry, had to fix it for you.

Every year Lick was here, he had the potential to have a better team the next year, but every year there were defections that gave Iowa another 'young' team. What's exciting about this team is that, although there are still losses, there is more upside and more excitement with the players and team this year, with no rumors at all of anyone leaving.

This year's team I expect to actually get better during the season. This is just the beginning.

Alford was a hell of a lot better than Lick. I mean he won two big ten titles and was a year removed before he bounced.

This.

I can't understand how some people blame the current situation on Alford. Alford finished his tenure here with 7-straight winning seasons, NCAA bids 2 of the last 3, and 9-7 in conference the last year.

Yeah, we regressed under Alford compared to the Davis years. I know all that. But we were nowhere near as bad at any point under Alf as we've been the past 4 years. We were sub-.500 under Lickliter each year, setting records for losses, etc.

So how is this year's struggles on Alford and not at all on Lickliter?

In my mind, the current mess is 90% (maybe more) on Lickliter.

1977 I agree. Anyone blaming Alford is just doing so because they hate the guy. Bottomline is this is ALL on Lickliter and it's not even close. Still have no clue what the hell he was doing. Lickliter was not even remotely ready..

Wrong. They had zero intensity from the beginning. They were overwhelmed by talent in their last 2 games also and I think both of those teams are better than Purdue. They were not getting after it(loose balls, rebounds, stupid turnovers) and if you didn't see that then you are blind. I'm not saying they would have won but they certainly would not have gotten embarrassed. This post is nonsense, sorry.

Tournament titles, big difference. Let us all just agree that they are both to blame, who cares how much.
