What happens when a developmental team starts out this good?

CAARHawk,

You used a bunch of words I don't understand, so I'm just going to call you a dbag and claim victory.

I win!

I wouldn't classify Iowa as a developmental team.

Of course we are a developmental team. We're always a developmental team. KF/NP/KOK have preached it since they got here - their goal is for the team to improve every week. Each week, they are given just a little more of the offensive playbook.

With the experience we have coming back, we are quite a ways ahead of where we may normally be at this time of the year, but trust me - they are still learning and getting better.

I highly doubt there will ever be a day, regardless of how good the team gets, that the coaches walk in and say "screw practice - you guys have learned everything".

As to the original post, I hope it means that we will get see more wrinkles in the offense. Maybe we will see the bubble screens, etc come out. I think that their experience will be reflected in our offense, and we will see a lot more scoring this year. At least, that is my hope...

Can't we just all get along?

I have also observed under Ferentz we tend to get better as the season progresses, barring alot of injuries. I don't know of any other program that improves from start to finish like we seem to year after year. It's really good to peak later, makes for great end of season games and alot of bowl wins. To start out this good, and barring injuries, we now have a chance to finally beat Ohio State for a change (only seen it twice in my Iowa watching career) and maybe even contend for the national title. It's gonna be fun man!

This is a very good thought, in years past we have had to really focus on the basics, espeically on offense. With us showing a command of that does that give us additional time to work on new wrinkles? Man thats a scary thought for the rest of the B10.

I've got to agree with Duff. Historically this team plays its best ball in Novemeber. If that pattern holds true this will be an exciting season.

I even hate to respond, since developmental is clearly a subjective term that people are just manipulating to fit their mindset, but what they hey, I can take a little pain.

If you honestly belived that my catergorizing Iowa as a non-developmental team means that they have no areas of weakness, have no room to grow, and have reached their ceiling, then you have to be intentionally misreading my intentions or you assume I know less about football than any person alive.

There is not a football team in America that has a coaching staff who believes they hit their ceiling on week one. There isn't a team in the country who doesn't try to improve from one week to another. If these things constitute a developmental football team, then every single team in the country is a developmental team.

My definition of the subjective term at hand here is a team that is not ready to win on week one, but grows over the season into a winner. Iowa last year fits that definition, but this year they were ready to compete for a championship right away.

Take it or leave it since reasonable (and unreasonable) minds will differ, but this has to make at least some sense to you guys....right?

That is what I am hoping for. It seems like KOK's offense opens up when he has experienced QB/WR/TE to work with.

Early on, we have been working on getting the o-line up to speed. I thought that they made a huge leap from game 1 to game 2. I'm thinking that, once they are comfortable with the o-line, we will see the offense open up a bit more...

So 4 and 5 star players don't need to develope? HA. I also like how you say "where have you been for the past 12 years" then later posts state u didn't watch 2002 season because you were too young, which was 8 years ago.

Do you agree that 4-5 star players usually don't need as much development as a 2-star guy, just because of their natural talent? That's all I was getting at.

And yes, I was 12 years old, and not ready to sit still for 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon. I wanted to get out and have fun on my two days off from school, and I didn't yet find sitting around watching the game fun. Obviously I do now (I've missed just one game since that Minnesota game in 2002).

Point being how can you ask someone where they have been for the last 12 years when you can't even go that far back.

Just because I don't go back that far doesn't mean I don't know that Ferentz and his teams have had basically the same MO for his entire tenure.

It doesn't stop you from knowing, but it does prevent you from lecturing everyone about things they experienced that you did not.

But I get it. I don't know how many times I have had to tell my grandpa that World War II wasn't really that tough.

Okay, I'll change my tune a bit. Where have you been for the past 8 years? That's a timeframe that I was around for. And what do you know, it's the same as the 4 years I didn't experience. So the argument doesn't really change at all.

Kind of like when you hear someone who's from Iowa complaining about too much snow in the spring. They may be older than me, but that doesn't mean I can't say something to the tune of: "Where have you been your entire life? It's been like this forever." That's completely different from your WWII analogy (though why anyone would come to the conclusion that WWII "wasn't that tough" is beyond me).

I'm also not "lecturing everyone". If that were the case, I would obviously be the only one who disagrees with your notion that this is not a developmental team.
