What Happened to Ohio $tate?

Maybe I'm too old fashioned. I used to respect Ohio State. Woody Hayes, with all of his faults, stood for something. He had integrity. He cared about his players. He tried to do it the right way. He was a real teacher who was in it for the kids and the school.

Now Ohio State cheats. All the time. What Tressel has done is incredible. He should be fired. Now.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: Ohio State should be given the death penalty. No school has ever deserved it more. You are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. And to the cynics who say that every school is like this: I say b.s., no they are not. Ohio State takes the cake.

Absolute shame for a once-proud program. Unbelievable.

I will be ticked off beyond belief if osu gets the death penalty and nothing happens to auburn. imo this board is full of osu haters. I dont hate them at all. now Nebraska Michigan and nw don't even get me started.

Give OSu the Death Penalty. The difference between OSU and SMU is OSU can recover from it.

I agree. If they keep giving their middle finger to the NCAA by keeping the liar tressel, then the only appropriate response is making them take a year off. There're not a tiny private school like SMU so they'll recover, but this will make sure Tress, the AD, and the school President won't be around to see it.

They already have inherent advantages and apparently still can't play by the rules. Some kind of outside punishment needs to happen.

The NCAA is a total joke, and everyone knows it. Even Herbstreit is saying that Tressel should be fired.

Problem is what you just said could be said for a number of SEC schools and other schools out there also...

I don't understand OSU fans....YOUR COACH KNEW about an NCAA violation...AND COVERED IT UP!!

The NCAA needs to pressure OSU to get him out.

HawkeyesWin is correct. USC has been one of the most corrupt programs in college sports at least since the days of OJ, and what has it gotten them? Everything. Cheating has gone on since human beings were invented, in religion and politics and business, not just sports. The thing is, cheaters have to be held accountable. When they are not, of course, cheating becomes its own reward.

SMU was wrong and arrogant and deserved what it got. But USC, Auburn and several SEC colleagues, Ohio State and a few others deserve it, too. If the NCAA wants to be relevant, let it hammer the big guys. Until it does, it is a footnote on an era of major college sports that may one day be looked upon with the same disdain as the steroids era of baseball.

I must be really not following this at all. Last I knew tressel said he didn't know who to talk to about it. Seems like it has exploded since then.

There is not a possibility of any of that happening. There is no lack of institutional control charge or a failure to monitor charge. The chance of being cited as a repeat offender is very low based on the NCAA's track record. Anyone anticipating a death penalty type penalty is going to be really disappointed.....

This. I don't think the NCAA is looking at OSU as much as they are looking at Tressel...if anything, OSU is going to be facing scrutiny (and not much more) for keeping Tressel around in light of these findings.

I think your problem is that your original impression of o$u was incorrect - they haven't really changed all that much (this is according to some o$u fans).

Anyone anticipating a death penalty situation is just fooling themselves really. That would absolutely cripple OSU's FB program and frankly the entire OSU athletic program because FB pays most of the bills.

The NCAA is not going to do that to any program unless they repeat SMU's mistakes which was pay players lots of money, be arrogant about it, and when you get caught, show no remorse, & keep repeating it. That was a program level problem. Everyone was involved.

In this situation, they're going after Tressel, not OSU. That's not to say that the program won't get punished but its been made very clear in the last 24 hrs that Tressel is the target.

I read this on the Illini board but was wondering if someone knew if this was true. A poster on there said that just because OSU was not charged with lack of institutional control or failure to monitor does not mean that they still cannot be charged with it.

Made it sound like that after OSU meets with the NCAA in August that they can still nail them for lack of institutional control or failure to monitor if they so choose.

Yes, this is correct as far as my understanding goes.

This is exactly why the NCAA cannot allow players to get paid. They already are anyway. If the NCAA were to allow players to get paid or a stipend, it would just open up a whole other can of worms on piping money to the players illegally. It already is happening, but the NCAA would lose that much more control over it. The only way a stipend might work is if the NCAA had control of the money pool & distributed the stipends. But, I don't see that happening.

People who think paying NCAA athletes is the answer are stupid. They think just because a star football player would get a $500 stipend every month, he would suddenly have no interest in a booster offering him tens of thousands of dollars. Paying players would create so many more problems than it would solve. Also, if you're paying athletes who bring in money to school, I assume you would have to charge athletes who play sports which lose money?
