When I look at who's online it says 29 members, 225 guests, and 44 robots. What the hell is a robot?

I've googled it, and I still don't get it. Why does it say there are 44 robots running around HN!?

Search engines have programs that crawl forums so everything posted here is indexed and searchable on the web.
