What do you consider progress for next year's squad

I define progress simply - more wins.

If next year's squad can't approach 16-18 overall wins with at least 7-9 Big 10 wins and some kind of post season tournament invite, I don't think enough progress will have been made in 4 years to not make any changes.

I know next year's recruiting class will bring some excitement and depth, but if Carver is still less than half full and we still are struggling to score 60 points a game AND there is not a significant increase in the number of wins, changes must be made.

At or near .500. I think going into the season next year with a "post-season or else" mentality isn't productive. This team might win 10 games next year, so for any of us to demand that Iowa make it into the NIT is a bit of a stretch.

If the Hawks can be within a game or two of .500 (on either side), then I think it'll be apparent that progress is being made.

Be 500X less boring, average 9000 attendance for the entire season...I do not care about losses so much if we are losing with dignity (ie playing basketball not Lickball).

I'd say "progress" would be winning 12 games or so. I don't know if .500 is realistic, but we should at least flirt with it.

I think the year after next is when we should see a winning record and possible NIT or better.

The announcement of a new men's head basketball coach would be a good start IMO. I also think that being within a game or two of .500 after 4 seasons is a big fat joke. People complained of mediocrity with the last coach, but being within a game or two of .500 is considered a good thing now?! Unfreakingbelievable!!!

I think next year's team will easily be better than .500! I would like to see around 17 wins. I also think they need to make the NCAA tournament by the end of Lick's 5th year. I don't know if that is too much to ask or not, but that is what I have been saying for quite a while!

A road win.

Starting lineup that isn't musical chairs.

A night where 2 guys get into double figures scoring.

Tucker sees a Big Ten game.

Come on man! When Lick first got here it was "we will be in the NCAAs by year three", now it is year three and look at where Iowa is now. Now you're saying we gotta wait 'til year five? How much rope do you give this guy? Right now his record, his uncertain job security, inexpereinced D1 coaching staff and lack of fan support are hurting future recruiting.

Time to cut 'em loose IMO, and get a fresh start. There is a nice incoming class along with a pretty decent squad and new facilities. I suspect if Iowa lands the right guy he could have this thing turned around in a season or two.

I agree with this. That would be progress.

I knowthat ForeverHawk has posted numerous times on the "5 year Plan" which really equates to 2-3 years of coaching his program with his recruits. Due to the roster turnover and other issues, he hasn't had this. I say this is the real first year and why it has been horrible to watch, they are making progress. I agree that next years team will be much better then this year for simple combination of veterans knowing the system and a decent incoming class to make for a strong foundation moving foward. If by 5th year we don't see NCAA post season, time to start over for sure.

Next year will mark the 3rd year on campus for Lickliter's first recruiting class. His second class will not be freshmen anymore, and he will have his 3rd class on campus, which I've seen some people hyping as the greatest thing since sliced bread. That's three recruiting classes that Lickliter will have on campus as of next year, and the first class will be juniors (don't call them inexperienced anymore). Four years is enough time to get your players in the program and start to at least show some progress.

I'm not asking next year's team to walk on water and make the NCAA Tournament. But I don't see anything unreasonable about expecting a .500 overall record or a little better.

A saw another poster say that only 12 wins is realistic next year? Lickliter won more than that (13) in his first year, inheriting a supposedly catastrophic mess created by Alford (according to some), and players who didn't "know the system" at all. So doing better than that is unrealistic in year FOUR?

From my perspective, the bar is being lowered more and more. Pretty soon Lickliter will be meeting expectations as long as the team shows up to participate in the games.

I say at least get a winning overall record (16-15) and get 7-8 wins or so in the conference. I don't think that's too much progress to ask for. The next year, we'd better be in the NIT or NCAA's. If we can't do those things, it's time to make a change IMO.

I don't like to predict number of wins, I would actually say to get a good idea about the progress of the program would be to look at how things look on this date in 2011. You will have about 5 Big 10 games out of the way and have some idea of how things look. Then you can evaluate the rest of the Big 10 schedule too.

As of today if Iowa only wins 12 games next year that is totally UNACCEPTABLE!

Hell I think Iowa has a shot to win 2-3 more Big 10 games this year which would put them at 9 or 10 total wins. Hell next year they play ISU and UNI at home so lets say they win at lest one of those games. Don't forget I don't see Iowa losing two games to a Duquesne and Texas San Antonio team.

This years team is way too close to 12 wins for 12 wins next year to be an Acceptable mark.

That is utterly ridiculos.

I would like to see Iowa win a couple road games in the Big 10 as well.

Lick will be heading in to his fourth season at Iowa....FOURTH Mother F'in season and some of you think progress is coming close to a .500 record? For the love of God where has this program gone?

Next year for me progress is winning 20 games, finishing with a minimum of 8 wins in the Big10 conference and making some noise in a post-season tournament.

And progress also means keeping every kid from this years team on the roster (with the obvious exception of Bawinkel). No kid should transfer and I mean none. Brommer has some game, he just needs to get minutes. Cougill has some game, he just needs to get minutes.

Progress also means landing at the very least one 4-star recruit.

When you're building a house, do you think it's progress when the plumber connects a pipe or when he finishes the job?

I don't think it will happen, but anything short of a .500 Big Ten record will be insufficient. These are all Lick's guys next yaer, he owns the team and their record.

If we're only at .500 next year we better be showing we are damn competitive in every game. If we miss the post season and have those lapses that are becoming familiar to us Lick needs to go.

This will be year four and we are only expecting .500 to save a job. My has our expectations fallen from where winning the first game of the NCAA every year wasn't enough. That sentiment makes me want to puke!

Alford made 1 NCAA tourney appearance in his first 5 years.

We landed a 4 star recruit this year in Larsen (according to Scout)

Ummmm, are you a plumber? I don't think you are because when building a house progress is occurring when the ground works are done, more progress is occurring when the rough-in plumbing is done, and then more progress is occurring when the trim out of the fixtures is done. Three distinct phases in the plumbing process, and progress is occurring during all of these stages.

Gimme a break! So, you are saying next season is phase 2 of a 3 phase process. That would mean the first 3 years were laying the ground work. Jesus, wake me up in three years when we get to phase 3.

What's your point? I thought it is common knowledge that Alford did not get the job done hence the reason he is gone.

I could care less about what Alford did becuase he did not do a lot.

We are talking about Lick and I just don't see how 12 wins next year is progress? Iowa will probably finish with close to 12 wins this year.

Agreed. Who cares about Alford. We are talking about T. Lickliter, so stop trying to point the finger in another direction. Lickliter is the head honcho now, and he is responsible for the product on the court.

Progress would be 18-20 wins IMO. Anything else after FOUR SEASONS is unacceptable and Lickliter is getting away with robbery.

Where did I say phase 2 of 3? I was talking about plumbing, jeeezzzz.

So like I posed earlier McHawkin, lets say you get your way and fire Lick. New coach comes in and keep all the recruits, and nobody transfers. Does he have to win 18-20 games also?
