What can we learn from Iowa's first 10 plays?

During the game Saturday, the commentators noted that Greg Davis always ******* the first ten plays of the game. In most cases, coaches choose plays for their ****** that they have a lot of confidence in. They run those plays a extra in practice, and the players have a grasp of what is going to be called.

For the Hawkeyes vs. NIU, here's what the first ten plays resulted in:

(1&10, I25) +4 reception KMM
(2&6, I29) +7 run Bullock
(1&10, I36) +4 run Bullock
(2&6, I40) +5 reception Davis
(3&1, I45) +13 run Bullock
(1&10, N42) +9 run Bullock
(2&1, N33) +6 run Bullock
(1&10, N27) 0 run Bullock
(2&10, N27) +8 reception CJF
(3&2, N19) +3 run Bullock
Total: 7 rushes for 38 yards, 3/3 passing for 17 yards

Following the 10 play ******, Iowa went for 2 yards and a fumble, a loss of 1, and an incomplete pass before kicking a field goal. This was by far Iowa's most effective 10-play stretch of the game.

What conclusions can we draw from this stretch? Most importantly, I think we can say that the players are good at what they have extra practice doing. From there, I would suggest that once the players have more practice reps under their belt, the offense will end up being quite effective.

Thoughts?

I guess we can see that the first ten plays all resulted in positive yards except for 1. They also led to 3 first downs. Hopefully Iowa can score a TD within the first ten plays this week, because the offense had a lot of trouble getting going against NIU.

I think we learned Greg Davis stole the first ten plays from the one's KOK used to run.

I think the first ten plays directed our OC to determine we could run the ball on NIU. The gameplan continued down that path. Move the chains, wear them down.

Totally agree with OP...It's a new offense, it's going to take time and it will eventually develop.

I have always been of the opinion that one of the reasons that Iowa is so different in November than they are in September is that Ferentz, by design, focuses on fundamentals and basics more than most. I think many other staffs begin game planning earlier and as a result maybe look a little more polished earlier.

I think the OP kind of goes hand in hand with that premise.

My opinion is based solely on little tidbits I have heard the coaches and players say in interviews over the years and admittedly just my interpretation.

I think; what can we learn from what happened after the first ten plays until the only TD.

No in game adjustments by the OC!

Um sorry can't agree with you on that. I see validity to an extent in what you say, however you tend to forget that had we executed, and make a better throw here or a catch there, and we come away with 6 on any of those first few possessions. Given we really didn't make the effort to stretch the field out, that doesn't excuse the fact that the players have to make the execute. Blame the players before you blame the OC, because he could call all the right plays and it wouldn't matter if the execution wasn't there.

results speak - and nothing looked like the play calling adjusted to JVB's lack of ability to look off a receiver. even the couple screen passes looked stupid - and had no chance of success.

They actually did move the ball well as shown in those first 10 plays. It is what happened in the red zone that matters. We SHOULD have scored 21 to 28 points instead of only 12. Thank you Mr Meyer by the way!

I would attribute the red zone in inefficiency mostly to the new offence and the high ammount of pressure that they saw from the NIU defence.

I like the new offence, get 4-7 yards on first down and move the ball quickly and in small chunks ala Northwestern. Iowa now has a dare I say "solid" running back, hopefully davis will tweak the offence accordingly. Use the pass game to get bullock huge runs and use bullock to set up the play action deep.

NIU did Iowa a favor by blitzing the crap out of us, we'll be able to scheme against it and plan accordingly.

well if the offense is a concern - then give the ball to Weisman when inside the 20! Goal line passing game sucks!

Use the run to set up the goal line passing game. If our run is as good as I think it will become then it will be respected and will be able to be used to our advantage.
