What are we looking at next year

Don't mean to jump the gun next year, but I am turning to the die-hard fans in asking how good will we be next year. I follow wrestling but not to the level some of you do. Should fans expect a down year next year? Will we compete for a Big 10 and national title next year? I know we have several seniors in the line up this year ... Where do you see Iowa fitting in the mix? Who will be the major contenders next year? Ohio State? Iowa State? Thanks for any insight ...

We have as much talent as any team in the country waiting to crack the lineup next year.

Tyler Clark
Tony Ramos 125
Mark Ballweg 133/141
Nate Moore 133/141?(may be a stretch)
Dylan Carew 149
Derek St John 165/157
Grant Gambrall 184
Ethan Lofthouse 184/197

All of those guys were considered elite recruits coming out of high school, and all are waiting to crack the lineup next year. (obviously not will make it)

I think St John, Nate More, Grant Gambrall are pretty much locks for the starting lineup

To answer your question, I think we'll easily crack the top 5 and definitely will have a decent shot at another title.

Minnesota and Oklahoma State have a lot coming back.

I think oklahoma state will be the team to beat next year. They have a bunch of talent coming back from a team that is ranked third right now. We have tons of talent waiting right now and coming in next year. The only issue is we haven't really seen them compete at the top level yet. I see the lineup for next year as:
125-Tyler Clark
133-Matt McD
141-Nate Moore(depending on how that staph infection was and how the recovery is)
149-Montell Marion
157-Dylan Carew
165-Derek St. John
174-Not really sure here but maybe Ethan Lofthouse if he can stay at this weight
184-Grant Gambrall
197-Luke Lofthouse
HWT-Blake Raising

Of course that all depends on what weight they end up at for next year, how they progress in the off-season, and how they new recruits coming in perform if they are not red shirted. An off year for this team is still a a very good team.

I agree with most of your lineup, but I think Tyler Clark will have his work cut out for him to get that 125 spot. A poster on TOS, says Ramos more then holds his own vs McDonough in practice. I think Nate Moore would be a really short 141, not impossible, would be difficult in my opinion.

174 is going to be very interesting, I'm not sure if either Lofthouse or Gambrall could cut 174 right now.

Not sure about Carew, I'm curious as to how well he holds his own vs Jansen and Kerr?

In a couple years, over half our lineup could be from one high school. Thats pretty crazy to think about.

I think that Okie St probably goes into next year ranked #1 and Penn St will get a lot of love too even though I'm not so sold on them for next year yet. Cornell will also be awfully good again but I think that Iowa should remain in the top 4 in the rankings and I look for them to place higher than that and compete for the national title. Iowa St and Ohio St will lose a TON of points next year and I'm not sure that either has the depth that Iowa has to fill those spots.

Iowahawkeyes89, I would not say that Moore is a lock for the lineup next year at all. A lot of things could hinge on what weight McDonough ends up at...

It is WAY to early to tell what the lineup will look like but I'll try to project it. The guy listed first is how I see it happening right now but a lot can change during the offseason. I do think that all of the true freshman will redshirt as well so I'm leaving them off.

125-McDonough, Clark, Ramos, Krutsinger, Trizzino
133-Moore, McDonough, Ramos, Mark Ballweg, Trizzino
141-Marion, McDonough, Mark Ballweg, Sheridan, Halverson
149-Carew, Marion, Matt Ballweg, Sheridan, Chiri, Gillmor, Sebert
157-Janssen, Kerr, Matt Ballweg, Kopsa
165-St John, Janssen, Kerr, Ducharme
174-E Lofthouse, Kerr
184-Gambrall, E Lofthouse, Lira
197-Ambrose, L Lofthouse
HWT-Rasing, Johnson, Pendleton

Fulsaasfan, obviously it is way early to tell much; but, in your opinion, what are Matt McD's chances of holding 125 for next year? At the beginning of this year, it seemed like it would be a stretch for him to hold it all year. He has made it with awesome results but a season of training and lifting may make it pretty difficult.

Yeah I completely forgot about McDonough(which I know is ridiculous considering the season he's had) when I said that.

If McDonough can make 125 again, then where the heck do you put Clark or Ramos? What a problem to have. Wont Clark be a senior next season? Kind of a shame to see him sit on the bench as a senior.

This is just my personal opinion, I just think Nate Moore is WAY too talented to keep out of the lineup.

fulsaasfan, do youu think Moore could go 141?

Clark will be a junior next year. He never used his redshirt at ISU so he used it this year for the transfer. I think if McD goes up to 133 next year, Clark will take 125. He had a pretty good year last year at ISU, going 25-8. He had a disappointing national tourny but with this year of practice with a good coach he should come out much better.

There are going to be a couple of very good wrestlers left out of the lineup at the lower weights next year! I think that in Matt's head right now he wants to be back at 125 next year. I think some will depend on how the rest of this year goes though to a degree. I do not think that you will see Matt at 133 next year as I know that they would prefer him to either get back down or go all the way up to 141. Of course that decision will probably have to be made in the next 4-8 weeks so he can really hit it if he is jumping the weights. That would most likely leave Moore at 133 and Marion possibly at 149. Like I said, a LOT can happen in the coming months but we should know within a few months what Matt's plans are...

BTW, Clark's never made AA. He went 0-2 at the 2008 NCAAs and 1-2 at the 2009 NCAAs.
