What are the odds?

There is no doubt the Iowa front 4 on D will be NASTY this fall. what are the odds of making a clean sweep and have all 4 1st team all B10? Has any team ever done that?

Doubt it, there is alot of great talent in the Big 10 and people tend to think (stupidly) that if several players on a line are having great years its because they are paying attention to the best one and letting the other guys go free or at least have single blocking. Clayborn will get the kudos no matter what, even if he struggles people will say he is freeing up the rest of the boys.

Not a chance, not with Cameron Heyward back for Ohio State and Ryan Kerrigan back for Purdue. Both of them play defensive end, so Binns is likely out of the running for 1st team. Defensive tackle, I'm not sure who all is back in the rest of the conference.

Thats the name I was going to bring up. Strangely enough, Iowa held him in check, as I believe he only had 3 tackles in that game.

I dont think it will happen either. Stats are what gets you on the All B10 team. There just aren't enough tackles or sacks to go around between 4 guys. But I sure think those 4 will be playing meet you at the QB all year!

I won't bet that that happens again, but I'd love to see it. Personally, if the awards had nothing to do with hype and everything to do with production, my picks for first team would be Clayborn and Kerrigan, Binns and Heyward for second team.

Clayborn will take some sacks away from our other defensive lineman as he will be a second or two quicker to the QB.

Clayborn is going to see a ton of double teams, QB's rolling away from him, and plays designed to take him out of the equation....all of that will be greatly to the benefit of the other 3 DL. Binns is going to have a monster season because a lot of plays are going to roll his way...and thus away from Clayborn. Klug and Ballard will be BETTER than they were last year and that's saying a lot. As an ISU fan first, I can tell you, this is the most impressive DL by far I've seen at Iowa...and I've followed closely since the mid 70's. Considering how good the 1980 and 2002 DL's were...there's good reason for Hawkeye fans to be very excited.

Its all going to make life a lot easier for the LB's and the DB's. If Iowa's D can avoid complacency and overconfidence, they may well be the best defense in America this coming season. Should be fun to watch.

As good as the '02 defensive line was with Hodges, Babineaux, Roth and Cole, the '04 line may well have been better with Roth, Babineaux, Leubke, and Robinson. But this year's will certainly be the best that Ferentz has had, to say the least.

SHOULD be the best. POTENTIALLY the best. They still have to prove it on the field...but they sure seem to have all the tools...as long as they can keep that fire in their belly and stay healthy.

Stats matter when it comes to All Big Ten teams...because no voter can watch every game. Every bit as important is reputation...why do you think Bulaga won Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year?

I think that every bit as important as the fact that there won't be enough stats to go around...we have 3 defensive linemen who don't have much reputation at all coming into the season...to think that all of them will impress enough people (who might watch 2 or 3 games of ours) to make them All Big Ten is a stretch.

Is it impossible...no...is it more likely that the Detroit Lions (my favorite NFL team) win the Superbowl next year...maybe.

We can still have the best DL in the big ten without all 4 being "all big ten". There's no way that Clayborne has the season last/this year without the help of the rest of those guys causing disruptions like they do. That being said... much truth to the statement about teams going "away" from him and putting double teams on him- I think Binns could have a HUGE year.
