What are some of these media types up in arms about?

That this incident happened, or that Iowa didn't immediately satiate their desire for news. I think it's the latter, and their criticism and lambasting is all ultimately about their own self interest. I think they could give a sh** about these kids, and will use them only to make a name and/or a story for themselves. Yes, it's a story, so report the story, but save yourselves the breath or keystrokes of the self-righteous indignation - I'm not buying it. Unless something illegal happened, or Iowa tried to bury the entire incident or do something unethical, all they have to hang their hat on is that they're pizzed that they didn't know more, sooner. I'm going to do something that I would suggest that any self-respecting journalist (an oxymoron?) would want to do - await the facts about what happened and then assess.

It's all about certain media types trying to leverage and sensationalize a story for their own self purposes. These types could honestly care less about the players.

If this program had tried to cover up a situation then why did they send players to the hospital on the first sign that something was amiss? That indicates to me how much the players well being was considered.

In my mind there has been no need to hold a silly PR press conference to talk about private information and speculation. Something very odd happened and the range of factors that could have contributed are wide ranging. It's going to take some time to assess and it's possible a definite answer may never been known.

I agree that the media reaction has largely been about Ferentz and Barta's response, but Kirk and Gary never should've given them the ammunition in the 1st place. They should've been at that press conference on Wednesday. If they are then I would argue that this media assault would've never happened or been justified on any level.

What do you think they could have stated or said that media would have said in unison...

'Oh thank you so much for this information.... we have no vested interest to sensationalize this story any more for our own benefit' ???

It's got nothing to do with the fact that they wouldn't have provided any additional information. It's all about how it looks. The media is "double-dipping", so to speak: they're pi*sed about not getting any info, AND they're pi*sed that Ferentz/Barta weren't there because of how bad that looks. The media firestorm wouldn't be as wild if they had been there. And regardless of what you might think, that stuff DOES matter in today's world. Perception is reality, and our perception definitely has been cast in a VERY negative light for the past 2 months.

I agree! To add to this, if Ferentz flies back on Tuesday to meet with the parents I don't believe there would've been any reason for them to voice their frustrations to the press. If anything they would've said, "Yes we're concerned, but we know how much Coach cares about our kids."
