"We're Indiana. We don't play in the CBI"

I thought this was funny:

"Indiana athletic director Fred Glass announced his decision Sunday night, informing the Indianapolis Star that the Hoosiers planned to pass on the chance to headline the CBI. Glass left no doubt why the school was declining the invitation, telling The Star, "We're Indiana. We don't play in the CBI.""

I understand teams declining the CBI, teams do it all the time, but to say something as smug as that is ridiculous. Sounds like Crean even wanted to keep playing according to twitter:

We would have loved to be able to keep playing. Our determination and confidence was high. Our desire to improve has been strong.

I'm not sure if Crean was referring specifically to the NIT tournament or if he's contradicting his AD.

It also sounds like Vonleh is leaning towards the NBA.

The CBI is obviously a step below the NIT. I can't blame any power conference team for turning it down, and certainly not one with Indiana's pedigree.

I would think indiana would want to get more playing time for the squad and maybe have the seniors go out winning a tourney.

Did the NIT already pick and pass up the hoosiers??

Yeah, they thought they would get in but they didn't. Kind of crazy considering the teams who did get in.

Minnesota got an NIT 1 seed and Illinois got a 2 seed. Penn state is a host team for the CBI

Agreed, I don't think Sheehey would've minded playing in the CBI as it would probably be his last chance to play basketball in North America

I disagree, just a tad, if playing in the CBI is below you then so should playing any non conference cupcakes along with playing in the NIT. Penn State took them up on the offer, good for them IMO.

I think the main reason teams turn down the CBI is financial. I believe the CBI requires you to buy/eat a lot of tickets if you can't sell them...and let's face it there's not much interest for power conference teams in the CBI. However, Indiana's AD also said that the reason wasn't financial, just simply "We're Indiana. We don't play in the CBI"

Guess if I was a coach and I had any say in the matter, I think I would let my players decide if they wanted to participate or not.

Iowa did the same thing a couple years back. I didn't like it even though we did get a bid in the NIT. I feel any chance you get to give your players and coaches extra games in a post season is worth it for the work put in. I wouldn't expect a CBI banner or anything but if the opportunity is there the players deserve to play.

It's because teams lose money when playing in the CBI, even more when hosting if cannot fill the arena. On top of that, it does nothing but put a smear on a team's reputation nationally if they participate. Any decent recruit would probably pass. It's not good.

As I stated above, Indiana's AD said straight-up that the decision to skip the CBI was not financial. It was because they're "too good" for the tournament.

I dont think Indiana would completely fill their arena obviously, but I highly doubt people wouldn't show up to watch Vonleh and Sheehey play a few more times.

You keep playing doesnt matter what tourny you are in. To pass on games means you are a bunch of stuck up dbags. Indiana screwed the Hawks this year and Ill most likely want them to lose every game they play in from now on.

I agree, if anything leave it up to the players.

They declined cause their danged arena is continuing to cave in.
Fools - that is a team I just want the Hawks to kill next year. Stinking bastantes.
