We have 14 guys on board. Of those guys who we have ships out to ... I only see about 6 or 7 likely verbals from that pool of guys. That will give us around 20 to 21 commits by the time late December rolls around. The big question then will be this ... we're definitely going to have a full class (25 guys, at least ... with the possibility of us taking advantage of the 3-over rule). Thus, what new names will crop up between now and then. And, if no new names crop up ... does that maybe mean that some of the "low probability guys" actually might end up pulling the trigger for Iowa after all? Hmmm ....
 
With so many (29, I think) seniors on this team, what is the chance the Hawkeyes go after a JuCo or two to fill the upperclass void? Some of Iowa's best players in the past have been JuCo guys, but I can't remember a significant player that was a true JuCo transfer in the past five years or so.
 
JuCo's are definitely excellent for filling immediate needs at a certain position, I kinda see it as a way to build a struggling program. It seems like we had more of them early on in the Ferentz era when the cupboard was a little bare. I think the coaches are confident enough in the guys they have right now to say that it isn't really necessary to recruit JuCos

Yanda last one I can think of, but didn't put much thought into it.
 
If staff found a JUCO at WR or LB who is ready to play, I can see them signing someone. Otherwise, I think they go with high school kids. DT is possiblity too but I think the current freshmen or Bigach will take spots there.
 
I doubt that Iowa would "spend" a ship on a JUCO unless the guy was pretty elite. Of course, I could definitely see us trying to land a guy or two as preferred walk-ons though.

If you look at WR ... I think that Soup would probably rather just give FR reps rather than opt for a JUCO guy. Besides, for 2011, we'll still have McNutt and Davis as the "feature guys." Furthermore, I imagine that we'll AT LEAST get one guy stepping up out of the group of Cotton, Martin-Manley, and Shumpert. Lastly, I think that we're going to be landing a high-quality group of FR for the 2011 class ... and one of those guys could certainly put themself in the picture for early playing time.

As for a JUCO at DT ... we already went after one and the guy ended up opting for Alabama. Considering the quality reps that Bigach and Nardo are getting and considering that we have some hungry, young guys waiting "on deck" ... I don't think that we'll need a JUCO DT. Besides, I really like our depth at DE for the '11 season ... thus, if need be, we could potentially have one of those guys move to the inside.

Other than those spots, I like our overall team depth. I really don't see too many holes ... other than at punter. Of course, there I'm hoping that the Aussie can speed up his delivery.

As for a JUCO LB ... maybe. However, with Morris and Kirksey getting up to game speed ... I anticipate that they'll nicely complement Bruce Davis and Nielsen at LB. Furthermore, I think that we have a walk-on LB or two who have been making nice strides.
 
As the recruiting season draws to a close it seems like a couple of kids almost always come out of no where as far as the message boards are concerned. Some of them may have been be a bit of reach academically earlier or may not have the stars we expect, but it always seems like we get a couple of surprises.

I'm hoping the DT prospects for 2012 are showing enough interest that we don't go the juco route in 2011. I'm still hoping for some runningback/linebacker combos help fill that need.

One more outstanding offensive lineman would be nice too.
 
Another thing to think about is the struggles with some of the other 'Midwest/BigTen' programs (Minnesota, Purdue).

Some other Iowa prospects to keep an eye on as a possible late offer:

Quenton James-Sioux City East-just passed K. Davis for the most career receptions at the 4A level.
Austin Elbertwoski-CB AL--one of the fastest kids in the state
Ben Boesen-TE/DL-Dowling Catholic

I agree ... however, given the recruiting time-line that some of our recruits are working with. I think that the specific guys you've listed will most likely get late offers ... that is, unless the coaches end up wanting to give any of them a grayshirt offer. We'll see ....
