Wegher vs Robinson

Is it just me or is Robinson a better back at this point? Is seems that Wegher goes down too easy. He is a great return man, but Robinson seems to get more yards when he is in. Wegher has shown that he is great out of the backfield for passing situations, but doesn't seem to make the same type of plays out of the backfield as Robinson does. Not that iit isn't good for him to get some experience, but maybe he needs to put on some weight to be used as much as he is. I think that he would do well to give Robinson a breather, but Robinson should be the main back. Just my thoughts.

It appears to be that way as things have progressed up to this point. Wegher has showed some promise in previous games. What we need to be most worried about is if Robinson goes down and we dont have Wegher to back him up.

If Robinson goes down and Wegher is unavailable, maybe we could see if Brinson is okay to play (there are injury rumors there). If not Brinson, Paki would be more than serviceable. You guys are forgetting about 2004 when we had Sam Brownlee at RB and managed to not lose a game after week 4. Our staff will adjust to whatever personnel they have at their disposal.

Power backs (Robinson) is how we operate, and always have (since Freddy Russell, but he was very evasive). Robinson needs to get some more evasiveness to be effective as a quick back, but Robinson can take the first hit and keep going. Until Wegher can learn to shrug off a few tackles I think we will be seeing Robinson getting more carries.

This is what I've been thinking about since half-time at Wisconsin. I wanted to see both of them get equal time, cause I figured neither would be a show stopper, and we would need both of them to get good production. But after the Wisconsin game, I think Wegher is showing he's a true freshman. I'm definitely excited about him for the future, but right now, Robinson is more impressive to me and should be the feature back. He's got the power to get those few extra yards.

The only thing Wegher lacks right now appears to be about 15 pounds. He still isn't strong enough to get past a d-linemans arm tackle. If the passing game picks up and allows the holes to open up a bit more, I think wegher has more home run potential then robinson cause he appears to be the better open field runner. I do believe though that instead of a 1 to 1 series rotation, maybe 2 to 1 for Robinson seems to have more production in the short term. I said earlier in the year that I would like to see what Brinson could do, so even a injury to either or these 2 leaves us with what appears to be a pretty decent spell back. An unproven one, but one with potential.

I think the difference is Robinson has a full year in the S&C program so he has the strength and stamina needed to break tackles during the second half of a Big10 season. Sometimes Wegher just gets overwhelmed by a d-lineman if he can't avoid him.

Wegher has performed admirably for a true freshman and I think he'll be a monster next year along with ARob. And Jewell.....that would make the deepest amount of backfield talent that I can think of for an Iowa team.

Robinson is the better back heading into the 2nd half of the season......but Wegher's roll may evolve these next five games into more of a third down scat-back/slot receiver.....which it would be fun to see both Robinson and Wegher on the field at the same time :)

Did I hear something on Sound Off from a caller that maybe Wegher got hurt in the Wisconsin game?

There was a rumor floating around that Wegher broke his hand, but that is unsubstantiated. There was also a rumor that x-rays were negative and it was just a bruise...either way, he was still listed in the 2-deeps as they were released yesterday. So either we're playing it coy, or he'll be able to play Saturday.

They are about the same weight with Wegher being a little taller...ARob is more of a power back...they are completely different styles of runners and I think a nice change up / compliment for the offense...I'm surprised no one ever compares Wegher to a young Ronnie Harmon...I know he has a ways to go but the potential is obvious...definately a nice third down playmaking type of back

What a great problem for the hawks to have! When I watch them, I have to remind myself that they are both freshmen.

One thing that Iowa has been able to do though with both backs rotating series is it leaves every play in the playbook open regardless of what back is in. I think if you start picking spots for the backs (short yardage, passing situations, 3rd down, etc.) and rotating them in and out depending on the play, it might tip our hand a little bit, and as it is right now our offense can be predictable. The series for series rotation IMO must stay, even if that means calling on wegher to run between tackles which he has shown to be his weak spot, or throwing the ball to robinson, which appears to be his weak spot. Unpredictablity goes a long way in an offense like ours.

Filmguy on the old site broke down the wisky game on film and analyzed the rbs performance and he indicated that based on film evidence , Wegher missed some seams in the line ...about 4-5 times, and bounced plays outside at least twice when he should have stayed inside. Just a recognition factor that is normal for a true frosh.
Totally correctable. KF and the coaches will be showing Brandon the same film and he will learn. Adam did a better job ,as expected for a rb with another year under his belt, and was more patient and found the tiny holes that were there.
The good news? The o-line did not do as bad a job as first suspected...there were some holes in there, but the backs have to be precise and find the seam. ARob is better at that right now, but that could change as early as this week. Keep the rotation working right now...fresh legs vs hitting frosh wall for both guys....love the rotation.

When Wegher hits the open hole right away he gets to the next level pretty quick and drives forward. Robinson however is a little more consistent at this point. To me they both need to get touches but when its time to milk away the clock with a lead it's Robinson time and when we are inside the two yard line trying to punch it in Wegher is the man.

The things that impress me the most about both ogf them is how they both protect the ball and both get the extra 3-4 yards when tackled down field. Robinson spins forward and seems like he grabs an extra 3-4 yards every time once he is up field.

It seems to me that BW is more concerned about not fumbling rather than breaking a tackle which is why goes down early. This is not a bad thing. I like BW alot but i think we are seeing what a difference the redshirt makes. ARob seems stronger and can break through the arm tackles. I think ARob is a little better as of right now.

Kudos to both. I can remember reading alot of "scared" peoples posts once Jewell went down. They are doing a good job.

Totally agree with ya TWR, BW knows (and ARob as well), protect the ball first, get the yards second. As a freshman, I wouldn't expect anything less and despite the film showing BW missed seams or whatnot, I think he has great vision, and it will show in time, sooner rather than later. you can tell both guys know they aren't going to single handedly win football games for us, but they do understand that costly turnovers can lose games for us, so the mentality for both backs is right on track for us. I wouldn't mind seeing maybe a 2 to 1 rotation for ARob in the 1st half and see what he can do with extra carries. Not enough to tire him out, but enough to see what he can do with a few more touches.
