Ben Brust -- Daily Herald's Basketball Focus 2009 | Deerfield's Dukan does in Mundelein

Devyn Marble -- I was unable to find anything from games this weekend.

Like I have said before in another thread, I was at the game last night. I have now seen Ben play against 2 other Big Ten recruits. Ben and Duje are both legit B10 players. Duje will fit in really well within the system at Wisconsin.

I saw a few Iowa shirts at the game last night, so if anyone was there as well feel free to chime in. This isn't through my "Hawkeye goggles," but Ben was easily the best player on the floor last night. I would believe that Ben's team would win if they had a coach that understood what was going on. Ben never gets the ball in the flow of the game unless he creates it. There is never any plays or sets for him, pretty confusing if you ask me.

Mundelein did a good job on Duje in the 1st half, but their coach realized that they were putting a smaller, quicker player on him forcing him to play outside and their coach put him in the post to take advantage of it. Of the few games that I have seen now of Mundelein, their coach never adjusts to help Ben. The ball never comes quick enough, nor does he get it enough. I know that sounds silly with the points he is scoring, but if they ran screens, or got him the ball right away it would be 40+ almost every game.

He handles the ball well, not great, but well, nothing an off season cannot strengthen. His is in passing lanes on defense, and crashes the boards hard for a 6'2 guard.

Anything I missed, or any questions that someone may have, ask away.

Alright here's a couple of questions I had...

I've heard Larson has a pretty nice stroke but is he also comfortable with his back to the basket and playing physically?

What position is McCabe playing in his games now? What role do you think he'll have on the team next year?

Thanks for the updates!

Any thoughts about how you think Brust will do as a PG at the next level? His handles, how he sets up his teammates, driving ability, etc. I know he can score but with the announcement of Tucker's return and without another obvious PG recruit this is where we need the minutes.

What about that 6'11 sophmore who plays for Sioux City East? The article metnioned D1 offers are flowing in, would any of them be from Iowa? Anyone know what his game looks like/

From when I have seen Larson, I believe that he is able to play some with his back to the basket. If you want to watch a game of Larson, here is one from the summer that is online. I believe that there is 2 games on there for you to watch, they are the Dakota Schoolers. The game that has a bunch of quality players is the game against D-One. I know that in that game the commentators had a lot to say about Cody and his game.

2009 Reebok All-American Camp

As for McCabe, I do not know what position he is playing. I know that Spank was hoping to get to the game in St. Paul this weekend, but that Heelan didn't make the trip because of icy conditions.

As for Brust as as PG at the next level, I would say no. I can see him helping with the ball handling, but as far as strictly a PG, no. As he is label by most as a Combo guard I would agree with that.

What do you think of Brusts quickness and is he a good defender?

I watched quite a few minutes of Larson playing in Vegas last summer and the kid definitely is adept both handling the ball and posting up. He uses the glass well from 10 feet in. Reminds me of the big men we've all see play at North Carolina and Duke. I think the biggest knock on him would be he probably isn't as aggressive as you'd like, but I think that can be said of most young big men. I will be shocked if Larson doesn't start for us next year.

HawkeyeBBall thanks for the updates. I watched about the first 5 minutes of the game and am MUCH more confident in Cody Larson than before. He has some good footwork and athleticism. Being a lefty will make him able to finish with both hands as well.

DuffMan I don't follow recruiting enough to know a lot about Woodbury but he has visited Lick's staff and I'm fairly confident that he has an offer. Somewhere else on this board I read he grew up in a big Hawkeye family.

Scout and Rivals both list Woodbury with an offer. He had a 22 point 22 rebound game earlier this year..... I haven't seen him play but that is a mind boggling stat.

Mundelein is struggling in their conference...lost back to back last weekend and are now 3-5. I know coaches son is a starter as a frosh, and a good player, but evidently not enough other talent to win this tough league.

Deerfield had a couple of guys, one of them a frosh, shadow Brust and they did an ok job evidently. I am amazed at how these frosh kids in HS can start at such big schools....evolution of the species ,I guess.

I really like Larson. I saw him play a year ago in HS and think he has quite a bit of upside. He does have a good back to the basket game at the HS level. Whether that will translate to the Big Ten, I don't know. He just seemed a more certain prospect than Cougil was in HS.

I get up to Sioux Falls a couple times a year and would liketo see him again. Of course this is all my opinion and I have been known to be wrong quite a bit:)
